Is Pepe ever acceptable to use?

I've joined a Destiny 2 clan and one of the default smilies for use in chat is a Pepe. But Pepe has also been classified as a hate symbol employed by the alt-right and generally seen as a brand marker for dog-whistling behaviour.

I'm always uncomfortable when it comes up, but its use in the clan seems to be entirely benign, as it does in that story.

I posted a CNN article, it's hardly a deep web conspiracy theory. I read the news a lot and I listen. I take care to update myself on current trends in order to recognise heinous gooseberry fool when it rears its head. Case in point: a friend of mine went to Manchester comic-con and saw a guy in Kekistan attire. He had to ask around to figure out if the guy was a twat. The alt-right consistently use 'seemingly innocent looking' symbols and designs to identify themselves and knowing this gooseberry fool is more important than ever these days. It's like not bothering to learn the different between 'coloured person' and 'person of colour.'
