How did what they were doing endanger him?
They were endangering themselves but unless you think the entire thing was going to grind to a halt which is highly unlikely I fail to see any justification for his actions. He could very well be in line for a charge of assault with the video evidence.
Again just because you think someone is doing something stupid doesn't give you a right to physically intervene.
Watching it again the escalator was working fine with them hanging off it there was no reason to think it would be a problem.

We were on a family trip to Paris once and my brother in law decided to try and sit on the handrail of one of their travelators. He jumped up to sit on it and must have triggered a safety mechanism because the whole thing stopped immediately, making us all stumble around like Enterprise bridge crew in a space battle. Fortunately it was quiet so there were only two or three people who weren't in our group on the walkway.
