True, but it was fairly reckless for the guy to intervene like that.

Although it looked bad, I think if those guys had carried on up hanging off the side up to the top then would have been far worse consequences. It would have been a massive drop.

Exactly. He could have just called them idiots but he didn't he took action that could end up in injury.
He isn't in charge at the shopping centre and has zero right to put his hands on anyone when they've done nothing to him.

They directly took action that endangered him. Impeding the movement of the handrail in that way has serious implications for the safety of the escalator.
If someone does something stupid that can lead to you or other innocent parties coming to harm do you not consider acting against that to be reasonable?

They were endangering themselves but unless you think the entire thing was going to grind to a halt which is highly unlikely I fail to see any justification for his actions. He could very well be in line for a charge of assault with the video evidence.
Again just because you think someone is doing something stupid doesn't give you a right to physically intervene.
Watching it again the escalator was working fine with them hanging off it there was no reason to think it would be a problem.
