Really? Because it comes across much more as being "hurr there are 72 genders now and I'm an attack helicopter" to me.
To me, the expression of the face in the meme is literally one of uncertainty. The whole attack helicopter meme is completely different, and if you want to talk about that my PMs are open, but I won't derail the thread here. It's this kind of pessimistic thinking that means we can't just have a laugh about things. I see no explicit negative connotations in this joke. It just highlights how the world has changed now, and our perceptions of gender is different to the point where what was said in a popular song isn't quite so obvious anymore. It sucks when you have to break down a joke like this, but I hate to see people get so mad over a meme. And it really sucks to see that you're upset over it when imo, there's not enough time in the world to get upset over something so insignificant, especially when you're actively trying to force a negative spin on it. But I digress.

I have to agree with SEP, Jezo. Any time I've seen that a meme with that monkey in it, it's been used to express discomfort at a situation, with the monkey usually representing a guilty party. For example:
The image definitely highlights how the worldview on gender identity had changed, but it's clear to me that the punchline is the monkey's discomfort with that change.
I'm not saying we can't have a laugh about things, but it's incredibly dismissive to say "why are you wasting your time getting upset" over something that was clearly offensive to the subject of the joke.

Yeah, given the broader context and usage of the monkey side eye meme, Jezo's reading of the joke seems generous at best.
The way I read it, it's classic "boomer humour". "Remember back in 2002 when we could have an innocent song about a boy and girl who fancy each other? Wasn't the past, before all this LGBT stuff we have these days, a better simpler time? You couldn't have a song like Sk8r Boi these days."
Surely, you can see how people can read it that way, and if that's how they've read it, then they're justified to be upset about it?

Sorry, I've got to stop posting when I'm super tired and have just woken up lol. The broader context and usage is beyond my scope at that time. This is a valid point.
I still think these things should be taken with a pinch of salt though. Must be tough getting upset over something like this, and I hate to see it.
