Wet charge. There was oil, water, or organic material in the metal. Most foundries preheat the metal to burn it off.

That photo is using foreshortening with a combination of zoom and the lens type, so it makes the statue look a lot larger than it really is. It's why that crazy steep bridge you see sometimes looks like that, as in reality it wouldn't appear steep like that. Think of the classic jaws beach zoom, like that.

It's called a dolly zoom. So simple really but it works so well.

I love that shot in fellowship, no explanation, just these massive statues leaving you to wonder what the story behind them is, then you just move on :wub: I've been to the river that was used for that shot, and aside from the statues not being there of course, it was far far shallower.
