Plane skids off runway in Madrid

A passenger plane has skidded off a runway on takeoff at Madrid airport, local media report.

Fatalities are feared and several injuries have been reported.

The plane belonged to Spanair, a major charter carrier, and some 160 people were on board at the time of the incident, reports say.

The cause of the apparent accident remains unknown. TV footage showed smoke billowing from the craft, which was destined for Gran Canaria.

Emergency services are attending the scene.

Weather conditions in Madrid were fine at the time of the incident.

Funny that. I was told the rain in Spain fell mainly on the planes.

Yay, and I'm supposed to be flying to Greece next week. This makes me feel so much more at ease. x

The cause of the crash doesn't seem to be in plane view...

I firmly believe I've more chance of scoring with 5 hot chicks at once than being in a plane crash. Airplanes are super safe if you consider how many are in the air at any one time and how few are in accidents.

Plane crashes are very rare and even then main danger when in a plane is landing and take off. Once you're in the air you're pretty secure.

Ooh Christ, they're now reporting at least 45 people are dead, other reports suggest over 100. There were originally 163 people on board.

I am flying to Spain on Saturday morning!

I am not that scared when flying but once I am up there every little creak and every shudder do scare me shitless. As much as I would like to visit the Lost island, I would never want to be in any sort of aeroplane crash or accident.

Savage, flying is pretty much the only thing that actually scares the gooseberry fool out of me, my mums going to Spain on tuesday.

It's a tragic, tragic accident. To reassure all the members here who are now apprehensive about flying — completely understandable, by the way — this sort of thing really doesn't happen all that often. Hence why this is so horrifying :(

I'm off to Spain in two weeks, first time abroad, first time on a plane. Top fears are flying and heights. This news thrills me.

Thing is, you'll LOVE it once you're up in the air. First time you fly the view actually takes your breath away it's so utterly beautiful. What hours are you in the air?
