That post about Sony making the industry is objectively untrue if that helps?

The current industry it most definitely is. If nintendo and sega battled it out we would have given up gaming years ago.

Edit - remember, that shiny xbox one under your hd ready tv wouldn't exist without sony.

True, Microsoft saw Sony's success with the PlayStation as a possible way to get Windows into living rooms.

A generation with Saturn vs N64 wouldn't have expanded the market at all and we our kids would probably still be playing nothing but platformers today.

As if you two are ever going to have kids. Take a look at yourselves.

They didn't make the industry any more than Apple made the mobile phone industry. Its simply an untrue statement.

If what you meant was that the industry would probably be in a very different place if it wasn't for Sony, perhaps that's true...but then you could say the exact same thing about Atari, Nintendo, Sega and even Microsoft.

As for PlayStation being the reason most people here are gaming, I don't know, but I suspect its complete nonsense. I'm sure quite a lot of people here were gaming well before Sony came anywhere near thinking about designing a videogame console.

To be fair to Apple, the smartphone industry wasn't heading anywhere. If it were left to Microsoft, Blackberry and Symbian it would probably still be a niche market.

Apologies if i upset anyone - i do genuinely feel sony made gaming mass market. Yes, nintendo may have done eventually or even sega, but remember how backwards they were/ are. Sega saturn was meant to be a 2d powerhouse, not a 3d gaming console originally...

It was really the ps2 era that gave me my best gaming memories imo - just a crazy number of great titles from gran turismo 3 to the amazing gta series, plus more. It feels like the ps4 is heading back to those days and the bad memories of the the initial ps3 launch are gone.

Sony didn't make the industry, but the PlayStation certainly was the starting point for what we have today. The game industry like any medium has different eras and you could argue that PlayStation was the start of the modern era of gaming we have now.

It's why I don't really class PlayStation retro.

Although you could argue that the modern era is a hybrid of what PlayStation did and Xbox Live did to the industry.

Talking console gaming here, we all know PC gaming has always been on the cutting edge.

Unless you define mobile games as modern gaming then blame the DS and Wii.

He is probably more like me and remembers that the 8 bit (Spectrum, C64, NES, Master System) era and the 16 bit (Amiga, Atari ST, Megadrive, SNES) era came long before the Playstation era.

Sony did wonderful things with the Playstation, but it is crazy to suggest that they made the industry, especially when many of us were gaming long before Sony tried to make a CD drive for Nintendo.

I genuinely thought the mods were 10-16 years old. I'm sure someone mentioned this on here, but could be wrong.

That's a bit of a cheap shot.

I really think you've got to give Nintendo some credit for the current era of gaming as well though. Remember the PS launched with a controller that had no analogue sticks, you could argue it was the N64 that really pushed 3D gameplay with analogue control to the fore.

I wasn't thinking about control inputs, I was thinking in terms of the sort of games we play, Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo, Resident Evil etc these sort of games changed things in a bigger way than 3D movement did.

If you can credit Nintendo with anything in the current gaming industry it would be the console FPS genre, Goldeneye was the one that really got the ball rolling.
