The Playstation 2, born in 2000, continues to churn out impressive sales despite being a generation behind the current slate of gaming. Earlier today Sony announced that the PS2 just hit 50 million.

And that's in North America alone, the Associated Press reports.

John Koller, director of hardware marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment of America, says the continued strong sales are because the people buying the console are lower-income consumers and families who want to get into gaming.

And that means the PS2 will be around for quite some time.

"We don't intend on discarding the system any time soon," Koller said.

So how long before Nintendo destroy that? I'd imagine Nintendo will get to 50 million much sooner.

But bravo to the PS2 for such good innings.

They should rename it to the "PS3 External Backwards Compatability Device".

I'd buy it.
