Finally pulled the trigger on buying an external HDD for my PS4 - grabbed a 4TB one from Amazon that was £89 but used a voucher I got for Christmas to bring it down to £75.

No more messing about uninstalling games I actually like playing to make room for new stuff :toot:

This also means I won't ever be getting a Pro (unless my launch PS4 dies, of course), so I'll be riding this train until the PS5 arrives.

I just had to delete a load of stuff to make space  - which HDD did you get out of interest?

Can you use USB powered ones, or do you need one with a PSU?

USB powered will be fine just make sure it's a USB 3.0 or above for it to work with installing games.

I shoved a 2tb drive into the PS4 when I bought it and I am nowhere near filling it up. 4tb should last you until the PS6. ;)

I've a 1tb external and still just under 500gb left to use up (uninstalled all PS+ games).

Extra storage for console gaming is a must in this day and age. I can't see the PS5 launching with less than 1tb.

I shoved a 2TB into my PS4 not long after I got it, and mine seems to be pretty much full and I consider mine very much a secondary console to my Xbox One (despite having the ps4 first).

Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it ;)

I also think that the tail-end of this generation will see games regularly pass the 100GB mark, plus updates/patches.

I picked up The Sims 4 for £12, because why not.

I'd like to think my eyesight is pretty good, but I really have to strain to read a lot of the text in this game, which really shouldn't be a problem on a 43" TV.

Simple choice between getting a bigger TV, or cutting down on the onanism.

My brother has an OG PS4 and is complaining that lately it's been getting really hot and the fans are getting really loud, so I'm guessing it probably just needs a seriously good clean out. Does anyone have links to some good videos on taking it apart and best ways to clean it?

One thing is be really really careful when you take the blueray side of the lid off as lots and lots of people break the power button when they do that.. For a start id remove the hardrive side and look how dusty it looks , and hold a turned on vacume cleaner pipe to all the holes you can on the machine and see if you can get away with that before thinking about really really going in to it.

Any good videos on removing that side? I don't have an OG to hand to take a look at it, just my Pro.

its about 1.25 in that vid, basically it just slides off. The video goes on to show how to take more bits off

I've had to take mine to bits loads of times (my kids used to keep putting coins and bits of cardboard in the Blu-ray drive :fp: ).

It's super easy laga.
The top shell is best to lever up and over from the rear rather than straight up.

Just remember what screws came from where and you'll be fine.

My OG PS4 fans became horrendously loud so I took it apart. It’s easy enough to do and easy to put back together.

If didn’t fix my noise issue though.

Likely the gooseberry fool thermal paste used that needs replacing and no idea how easy that is.
