Has anyone had problems installing games before? I bought Sekiro yesterday and at 4gb of the install process the disc reader would start making a lot of noise before I would get an error message.

I don't think it's the PlayStation as I only bought it last September, and I can't see any damage on the disc. Will likely return the disc for a replacement if I still can't get it working but thought I would check if anyone has any possible fixes that are worth trying?

What error popped up, sawyerpip? It sounds like an issue with the disc if the remainder of your games are installing and working okay.

If you suspect that the hard drive is not operating correctly, you could try using the rebuild database option - but I'd suggest that you only do this if you've (a) tried using a replacement game disc and (b) identified hard drive issues with other games, too.

It was a generic "an error has occurred" message which as far as error prompts go is pretty useless.

Cheers both, I'll try another disc tomorrow and see what happens.

I just saw that Sony will not be giving digital game codes to shops anymore. Does this mean that if we go digital only we can only get games from the PlayStation store, and then have zero competition on prices and then end up strawberry floated on pricing?

Link

I will admit I have only read the title of the article due to being on the bus with my kid and I'm talking to him instead.

I've not been into a game in years but do they still do those cards with game codes on them?
Surely those are under the control of the publisher rather than Sony.

No clue the link to the article is in the above post of mine, but does it all include online shops like CDkeys?

I think that's already where digital gaming is, I've never seen those digital codes reduced in stores.

Yeah, Sony controls the distribution of the download codes to retail stores and they've decided to stop distributing full game codes. It seems that they're continuing with just the top-up codes and dlc codes instead. I'd imagine that the focus is on the top-ups as they have a longer shelf-life; they don't change in value.

The digital console stores remain, in effect, monopolies but I've grown to accept that; I just don't buy stuff if I feel it's over-priced. Publishers have trained some customers to pay out crazy amounts at launch (and I have done this) but they then drop prices quickly and dramatically when their game "only" sells five million copies instead of the "expected" two billion.

I love using my PS4 but, dang, the file update process is getting worse! The preparing / downloading / "copying" process is getting tiresome; I don't know what the increasingly common copying stage does but it's so slow :x .

Still worth it for all these great games, though  .

I wondered what this copying thing is?

The copying phase seems to be quicker if you put the PS4 in rest mode, no idea why!

I *think* it's something to do with the PC-like "defrag" (defragmentation) command; it's moving game files around on the drive so that they're more quickly accessible (grouped together). It seems to happen more now that I'm using a larger external (USB) drive on my PS4.

The biggest flaw in the digital game future is the store monopoly on consoles. With music you have options (whether buying or streaming), with video you have options. With consoles though?

I don’t think the monopoly will last, sooner or later somebody is going to take it to court and win. Probably when consoles go digital only.

As jawa says I'm pretty sure it's defragmentation. It won't happen on a new console, and you'll start to notice it once the HDD gets full and you've deleted a few games, so the free space is no longer bunched together.

April Plus games: The Surge and Conan Exiles. I confess that I know little about either.

The Surge is a sort of Sci-Fi Dark Souls.

Conan Exiles is a survival game thats online similar to games like Ark (I think)

The Surge is pretty good and has a challenging but doable platinum trophy if that's your bag. I rented it from Boomerang a while back but sent it back before the DLC came out, getting it from PS+ may prompt me to pick up the DLC.

Dang it, Sony must base their decisions on PS Plus games purely on what I've bought. I slapped out fifty wraps for this  :x ... :( .

...and have barely played it. It does seem to be pretty cool, though; *if* you're into survival / crafting / MMOs.
