PostPlayStation 4 help, can I give stuff to my boy?
by Rapidly-Greying » Tue Jul 23, 2019 1:22 pm

I've been split up with the mother for years and the kids live with her. My boy got a PS 4 for his birthday so my question is, if I give him my password so he can sign in as me at his own house would he be able to sign in as me and download any of my games that he fancies without me losing anything and all hell breaking loose?

One of the PS4s must be set as your primary console for your account. Currently that's your PS4, and by default if your son logs in as you on his PS4 it will be a secondary console for your account.

On a primary PS4, any games downloaded can be played by any accounts on that PS4. So if you download a game to your primary PS4, another user on that PS4 can then play it.

On a secondary PS4, you must be signed in to PSN with your account to play your games. Other accounts on that PS4 cannot play your games.

You cannot sign in to PSN on two consoles at once. Attempting to do so will sign out the existing session.

The easiest thing for you to do would be to set your son's PS4 as your primary console. Then, after downloading games onto it from your account, he can play them with his own account, either online or offline. You can then continue to play your games on your PS4 (now a secondary console), with the limitation that you must always be online. Obviously this requires some level of trust that your son won't mess up your account in any other way!

Please someone correct me if I'm wrong

This is a great question that will become more and more pertinent as people become download only.
I can see the reason that companies don't want you to be able to just transfer to anyone but being able to transfer a games library to children should be simple.

I can see it being something people will cherish after a sibling passes away to remember them by playing the games they loved and I think most would say it should be something we can pass on without companies barging in and claiming its piracy or something equally pointless.

Very good advice. Better advice though - don't store your card details on PSN!

I have a linked question to this, but regarding xbox if I'm allowed to move the topic across formats?

First, let me explain the current situation. Our house has 2 XB1s, 1 for me and 1 shared by my 2 boys. Theirs is set as the main xbox and all 3 of us have our own profiles on there. Mine is locked down so they can't sign in as me. I am a Live Gold member and EA access member too. This allows my boys to play any of my games and online too (although they really only play Fortnite and Fifa). I rarely use XB1 and when I do, I don't think they're online at the same time

Anyway, my elder son is getting his own XB1 for his birthday. Fifa is his big thing but he does like the occasional go on Fortnite.

My questions are:
1. Will my Live account be enough for him to play online on his console as well as the existing 2 other XB1s? Fifa is disc based so only one of them will be able to play that at the same time, but Fortnite is obviously digital only.

2. What do I need to do to enable him to potentially play online at the same time as either of the other XB1s? Whether on the same game (e.g. both on Fortnite) or on different games?

3. Do I need to fork out for another Live Gold membership just for him? If I do, my missus is ok to set herself up to essentially replicate what I do at the moment. However it annoys me that we might have to pay twice each year just for Live.

4. Will EA access work ok on his console? Are there restrictions over 2 consoles using EAA at the same time for the same account? Will my missus have to subscribe to EAA too?

5. I dont sub to XB Game Pass at present but am tempted. Would that allow simultaneous use across 2 or 3 consoles at once using 3 Gamertags but 1 GamePass
and XBL account?

Sorry for the questions. TIA

Pretty sure you'll need to get everything for him. Game sharing will work on 2 consoles total. So no live, shared games EA access, Gamepass.

Goddamit.

If they didn't both want to.use Live or EAA or GamePass at the same time, presumably then they could though yeah?

If they use your profile. Only the main console will be able to access stuff with other profiles. I may be wrong though. Probably better off asking Monkey Man as he seems to keep gooseberry fool up to date in the Xbox news/features threads.

It means that for him to play games on his console and your other son play the same games on his. One would need to be signed in as you. He won't be able to use his account with those games if the home console is set on another Xbox One.
