I think in the first year you really need to target the core audience and MS forgot this. Instead of praising the Xbox One and spreading positive word of mouth most 'gamers' were hostile to what Microsoft were doing. Then you had Sony who were saying all the right things and launching at a cheaper price point with a more powerful system. I like what Microsoft are doing now with the system and the direction Phil Spencer is taking them but they're in a position where they really can't afford anymore mishaps. I'd imagine in an ideal situation they'd like to get a slim, cheaper version of the system out as soon as possible and almost treat it like a re-launch. It's a shame this couldn't have happened this christmas because they've got three fantastic looking exclusives in Halo, Forza, and Tomb Raider which even without the buzz of a slimmer console should help them shift units.

While it's true that Japan's games market has noticeably declined since the launch of the PS3, I understand that Japan is still in the top five in terms of PS4s sold. It's just no longer in a very clear second place.

I'm genuinely struggling to think of a bigger PR disaster in videogames than Microsoft's actions for the first three quarters of 2013. I'd argue that the run-up to the Xbone's launch was worse than the run-up to the PS3 launch.

I have no idea how you can say it was a 'fairly decent proposal', it was a disaster.

Well that's just nonsense.

It started even before they announced XB1. Probably around the release of Kinect and the focus away from games. That's when they began to destroy any brand loyalty they had.

With the launch of XB1, MS forgot what had got them to that point in the first place. They arrogantly ignored their loyal fan base to do what they wanted.

Just like Sony did when they launched the PS3. They just assumed everyone would buy one, despite the price and the fact they had no games.

TBH the tide turned a good few years before and this was always going to happen. MS started to get cocky and shove stuff at us like Kinect and Sony started introducing new ideas and experiences like PS Plus and indie games. The rest was history.

This is slightly different. The XBOX360 had, what, a 10m unit start on the PlayStation 3 but from launch Sony's console ate away that lead even at a much higher price. Gamers did want to buy one.

This time there's no millions of units advantage and PlayStation 4 is pulling away.

I'd have to say this more on point. The reductive nature of a Kinect driven system started to kill momentum back on XBOX360, just that the disastrous reveal of the XBOX ONE did even more damage.

Most people where I live seem to play games on either their mobile's or DS's. The DS section of the local games place is by the far the largest section covering about 1/3 of available floor space.

Microsoft and Nintendo don't want you to know...

...but they're at about 16m and 11m respectively.

Insane numbers. I think they've timed the price cut very well, too - should give renewed momentum going into Christmas.

Article says 29 million shipped not sold. Impressive figure none the less.

I am close to cracking and buying a white one although my brother has one and dosen't really use it.

That almost 176bn yen swing from last year on operating revenue is mental, nearly £1bn of proper money.

Wii U has shipped 10.7 million after 3 years. That's direct from Nintendo in their investor briefing on tuesday. They were at 7.29 at the 8 quarters stage, which is what that list/where the PS4 is now.

I don't know why MS aren't giving numbers. I mean, I know why they'd not WANT to share them, but as a public company, aren't they under some kind of obligation?

Microsoft are desperately trying to avoid a repeat of this...

Being perceived as the loser would seriously dent future Xbox One sales, so instead they show data on Xbox Live subscriptions despite the majority of those being for 360.
