I don't know why MS aren't giving numbers. I mean, I know why they'd not WANT to share them, but as a public company, aren't they under some kind of obligation?
They can lump it into "devices" or total sales for the xbox division and hide them that way. Theyre under an obligation to show how each division is doing but I dont think they need to break it down to consoles shipped or sold or anything like that.
Its incredible to think that this was all caused by Don Mattrick and the horrible reveal for the Xbone, on paper I should like it, it has the games I want and I love the controller but I just cant get that bad taste of that reveal out of my mouth which makes me think if I were to get a console it would be a PS4.
I don't want anyone to think this is me making excuses as the guy was an absolute disaster but looking back the entire Ballmer era was terrible.
-Basically inventing the subscription based model with the Zunepass and then waiting years before bringing it to other platforms and customers outside the US
-Windows Live Mesh. It was Dropbox before Dropbox.
-The embarassing attempts to compete with iOS with Windows Phone 6.5 and then the utterly shambolic handling of Windows Phone 7
-Buying Nokias hardware division
-Bringing back Elop
as part of that deal
-Launching a touch optimised OS in Windows 8 without having a touch optimised version of Windows Office even close to being ready
-Windows 8 in general but especially RT
-Scroogled
-The lack of investment in Xbox when they were on top with the 360
The last one is I suppose the most relevant to this discussion. If you look back at the last generation its baffling to look at how many times a cash rich Microsoft sat back and let other companies pick up relatively valuable IP and developers for what looks like pocket change compared to the Minecraft purchase. Mortal Kombat, Tomb Raider, Saints Row, Just Cause, Bizarre Creations, Relic, Deus Ex, Evolve, Tecmo, Bioware and Hitman all sold for a fraction of what Microsoft spent on Minecraft and most went for significantly less than what they have spent acquiring apps like Sunrise. If they still planned on pushing the always online angle with the Xboxone they'd still be in second place but if they had bought even a handful of the names I've mentioned they'd be playing with a much stronger hand. Instead of owning Tomb Raider they are now paying Square Enix compensation to keep it off PS4 for a year.
