Sony's PlayStation Network sales hit 529 million yen which means that PSN generated more revenue than the whole of Nintendo (504m yen).

I could not be more delighted about this.

Why? Are you a Sony shareholder?

No. I don't care that it's one company over another.

I'm delighted that investment in standard infrastructure and online services, which I've been wishing Nintendo would actually get with the program on for a decade now, has proved to be such an overwhelming success compared to the cynical toys-to-life direction they focused their efforts towards instead. People want, and will evidently pay for, the console-level online experience they've come to expect. It's a wake-up call that can't be ignored, and will hopefully shape their strategy for NX.

That's revenue, not profit. And remember what Nintendo have saved up, completely dwarfs this by more than an order of magnitude (or perhaps two orders of magnitude, whatever its a lot).

Not that Sony aren't doing well as well, but if you think its going to cause Nintendo to think they have to immediately change their ways...well like I said they've got plenty of money.

You are missing his point - jiggles wants Nintendo to have a decent on-line offering and this shows how much money can be made with a good service. If the revenue from just PSN is more than the whole of Nintendo, beefing up on-line presence is clearly something Nintendo should be looking at.

No I get what he was saying, but I don't think that's necessarily what Nintendo will take away from looking at figures like that.

They've got a lot of money and so can easily afford to take a different path...seeing as the reason they are sitting on a lot of money is because they took a different path in the past, its not hard to see them doing the same thing again.

The only real reason that the revenues from PSN amount to more than Nintendo's entire revenue is that Sony are sitting on a huge install base of consoles and Nintendo aren't. Its not down to any particular online sales strategy that Nintendo haven't already been doing.

This is why I don't understand the Neo thing. I'd have thought you'd try something different if the console single spec model was no longer working, but it clearly is...

I don't see how giving the consumer choice is anything but good.

is it a decent online offering that is making people pay or the fact you have to pay to play online that is making them money?

Such a success they don't need to bother implementing 2 factor authentication 5 years after being hacked and can get away with treating their customers like garbage when they do get hacked.

Some people seeing below as further evidence of PS4K/price-cut:

Sony expects to sell 20m PS4's between April 2016 and March 2017.

According to the "experts" on NeoGaf, PS4 and XBO will be able to reach the £100 price backet in their twilight years due to their architecture.

A third of PS2 sales came after PS3's launch due to sales to 'casuals' and the developing world. As they can't afford to sell PS3 for any less I'd expect lifetime sales to finish between 90m-100m.

What we need is a sales bar for hot cakes to see if the PS4 is selling more, less or equal to them.

Blimey, the Wii is still dominating the market!

Don't panic or post more sales charts - I'm not being serious.

Wow, the PS3 just surpassed the 360 in the end.

It's odd how sale numbers can change perception. As you say, KK, the PS3 has eventually overtaken the 360, but personally I'd regard the 360 as being the more popular console on the basis that it lead during the key years of that console generation.

I'm not dissing the PS3 or Sony - I own the console and it's great! - but it'll be interesting if, in future years, folk start talking about Xbox coming third in that console generation, and sharing the above sales chart to "prove" it.

Still going too, I assume it's following the PS2 during its twilight years and selling well in countries like Brazil.
