I was hyped for the PSP in a ludicrous way at the time. Secured one of the Japanese launch units with Ridge Racers and it was glorious. It genuinely felt like a PS2 in your hands at the time (At least for a little bit) and the screen was gorgeous (Again, for the time). I remember just booting up Ridge Racers to show off the opening cutscene on it. Was a good 8-10 months before it launched here so it it always got attention from my mates when I brought it out.
Strangely enough I only ever bought 2 more games for it. Metal Gear Ac!d and Wipeout Pure, both as soon as they were available on import.
I also got GTA: Liberty City Storys for a present one year.
The main issue PSP faced was that it was ridiculously easy to softmod it and load dumped games and homebrew.
Quite early on as well. It was very easy to load downloaded PSP games.
I was utterly skint at the time and found it hard to afford many games (The PSP itself had been a joint Christmas/Birthday present) so I pirated stuff for it more than I would have liked.
But it did mean I got to experience most of the big games on it for a while.
The homebrew was game changing though. It was the first time I'd ever had a portable emulator of any kind and being able to play Mega Drive and (most) SNES games at full speed on the go was ridiculously cool.
ScummVM was great too. I actually found a bug in the emulator when playing Monkey Island, really deep into the game. It would just refuse to load up properly when you enter the big monkey head. So that game is completable on PSP based on my bug report.
Oh and the video playback ability was great as well. I remember converting episode of Star Trek Voyager to watch on the go when on longer journeys. I never actually had any of the UMD movies. I never really saw much point as I wouldn't really choose to watch a movie there.
All of that to say I strawberry floating loved the PSP at the time.
Never got a Vita though. Regret missing that one.
