I don't think they can pretend that Covid didn't affect the launch cycle here. This is the first time (for PlayStation) where there haven't been multiple compelling reasons to upgrade by now, i.e. where you can do things on the new one that you can't on the old one almost as well. Which isn't to say I don't think it's a great machine, it is and I'm happy with my purchase.

Got the crazy notion that system crashes when entering rest mode after playing a game might be tied to having an online + sub. Weird I know, but since my sub expired at the start of May I haven't had a single crash while leaving a game running and powering down into rest mode and I've tested it out quite a few times just to see if it was just fluke. Before my sub ran out 9/10 times it would crash the system with a green screen.

I'm on PS4 but figured the same answer would apply here - are the free 14 day PS+ trials still a thing?

I haven't had the service for years but fancy playing something online. Would rather do it for free than have to pay. You used to be able to find the option in the PS+ section of PSN but I can't find it anymore...so I'm guessing it's no longer a thing

Have you ever used the free trial on your account before, Dangerblade? If so then I think you'll be out of luck in getting another one. CDKeys are selling 14-day trial codes for £1.79 but it'll only work if you've never had a trial before.

There are some "work-arounds" on various places on the web but they look to be a bit unreliable.

Thanks Jawa. Not sure if I ever did, it would have been 10 years ago if so. Might just buy a month trial

Sony announce their next acquisition is Sony, no insiders predicted that.

A huge problem for Sony still seems to be manufacturing and supply; as soon as PS5 consoles are on the shelves they sell out, but getting them there is a big challenge.

I like the PS5; both the look of the system and the performance - albeit at this point I don't feel we've seen too much "new gen" stuff.

For me, though, I feel like Sony has created a wee bit of a negative vibe around their gaming division. The pricing of games, the lack of availability, the sometimes odd approach to game upgrades, a sense that they're now "for profit rather than for the gamer"... it feels like being an unwanted turnaround after their massively successful PS4 years. The PS5 console has undoubtedly been a sales success but the general vibe isn't quite reflecting that. I'm still a fan of PlayStation but I would like them to do better.

According to people on ResetEra who are going through the report/sat in on the briefing: Sony are expecting to ship 18m PS5s this fiscal year.

I still think Sony should launch a PlayStation TV, with a PS5 in the TV.

Yeah, Sony has said that it is aiming to sell 18m PS5s this coming year - which would be a big leap from the circa 11.8m sold this past COVID-impacted year - and they claim to be able to secure the components necessary to manufacture this amount. This could be impacted by any further COVID lockdowns in China, though.

A new PS5 bundle has launched, incorporating the disc version of the console along with a copy of the Horizon Forbidden West game for £499.99. From the picture, even when zooming in, I can't tell if it's a disc version of the game or a download version that is included.

Oh, and, obvs - the bundle has already sold out at ShopTo.

A redeemable voucher code is in the box, rather than a disc.

The last thing the PS5 needed was any sort of bundle, but a nice up-sale job from Sony (especially as it's a download). They have knocked off, what, £20 off the Network price? So that's something.
