It would help us out if we knew what ‘notchy’ was.

Not as smooth and fluid as it should be. Almost like it's sticking or catching during manipulation.

Unfortunately there are no easy answers for fixing an analogue stick, kaz, but it may be worth checking out these tips from PlayStation Lifestyle.

Or, if you're willing to take the pad apart to fix issues, this vid on YouTube is pretty comprehensive.

Cheers Jawa, I will have a look at that link later (blocked at work).

I'm guessing I probably will just have to live with it (as I have the past 8 months or so). I only noticed it about a month ago tbh, but I suspect it has always been like it, it's just now I can't stop noticing it.

I have 2 pads, so this one (the one I was forced to take as a Currys bundle item with the PS5, ironically) can just be for if the battery in the other one is flat etc.

Alternatively I will sell it to some unsuspecting sap in the For Sale section.

It's a shame the QC on these pads is so bad. Not the end of the world though!

It does seem that, generally, people are having far more issues with faulty controllers nowdays. I wonder if this is because the pads have more complex tech in them... or if poor quality parts are being used?

Have you tried contact cleaner made by WD40? It's amazing stuff.

I have to think it's a bit of both. Trying to keep the costs somewhat acceptable leading to some excessive value engineering.

I have tried an equivalent thing, yes (its worked for me in the past on joy cons). It had all but run out though, so I wonder if was not able to give it a good enough blast. Maybe I will pick some more up. I'm bound to need it on one of my controllers before long!

My left stick was drifting upwards and I used a straw to try to blow out any gunk. It worked, but it has started drifting to the left now  Cheap shite.

I reckon it's something to do with analogue sticks being a monopoly with all three console manufacturers sourcing parts from the same company

According to this interview with Kenji Tosaki (a former peripheral manager at Sega) the issue is the poor design of the patent Sony owns and all the other manufacturers license from them: https://www.retrorgb.com/kenji-tosaki-interview.html (Lots of cool info besides the whys and wherefores of shitty analogues.)

...yeah, that was a great read, SoK!

A company called Gulikit has recently launched a pad called KingKong 2 Pro Controller which claims to have new patented technology that eliminates drift and dead zones on the sticks.

Reviews seem to be positive.

I treat mine periodically as a preemptive measure absolutely no idea if it works, but I haven't had issue thus far.

I have found another can, will give it a go tomorrow and see if it helps (I have my doubts in this specific case, but I agree it is excellent stuff).

Finished the Lake yesterday. Definitely wasn’t expecting a random cameo from…

…the bloke from The Office, playing a metal detector bloke outside the Motel.

Weirdly, despite the sheer mundanity of it all, I wouldn’t mind seeing these characters again in 3 or 4 years.

I got that WD SSD expansion from Amazon. I cannot believe they just bunged it in a A5 sized card envelope :fp: And then at the pick-up location, the lady behind the Post Office counter squeezed it through the gap at the bottom causing the whole package to bend slightly :fp: So where as before I was uncertain whether I was going to keep it or not, I am now completely certain it's going back.

I'm all for reducing unnecessary packaging, but surely fragile tech needs a slightly oversized box? I guess I should count my blessings they didn't just slap the address label directly on the product packaging and call it day.
