I thought that was an excellent presentation. Game after game with little-to-no fluff. A decent amount of gameplay shown too.

My PS4 backlog is still a little too big to consider making the jump yet, but by the time God of War Ragnarok releases, I reckon I won't be able to resist. Resi 8 and Spider-Man Miles Morales probably the other highlights for me, but I'm sure Horizon and some of the others will be must-owns.

Only hesitation is that pretty much every game either a third-person action-adventure, or an FPS. Not much variety yet.

Is the PS5 backwards compatible with all digital PS4 games? My collection has been 90% online this time.

The Japanese price for both editions is £290/£350 because of the exchange rate, so I'm tempted.

Not sure I fancy the digital version purely because you're locked into Sony's online pricing then and I have a feeling they are going to try and bloody fleece us. I'd probably rather see how it goes with that.

Around 99% of PS4 games apparently.

Makes perfect sense to me for Spidey.

HZD is a way off yet. Couldn't care less whether a pared down version is available or not. It'll look and play beautifully on the PS5.
Some people reasons for not upgrading are valid. Some are laughable.

Personally I like the design and colour but it's sitting at the side of my cabinet on its own base..its attractiveness as a selling point is minimal to me.

It was very underwhelming. I might end up going halves not long after launch as my girlfriend is more excited (for Spiderman and Demon's Souls, and then Horizon) but if it were my decision alone I definitely wouldn't be buying in any time soon. Not just a sparse launch line up but lacking almost any exclusives announced completely.

I thought Final Fantasy was a weak opening. I'm interested in the game, sure, but it's simply not the technical showcase it once was is it? It looked worse than XV if anything. No mocap, not even lip synced, and the voice acting didn't sound particularly aspirational.

I'm not overly familiar with the evolution of COD but it now looks very Far Cry which is not what I thought the game was. Any semblance of "realism" seems to have disappeared. Maybe it was just the demo being on easy mode but the "charge straight into gunfire" gameplay isn't what I was expecting. The demo in general was frustrating anyway for being so unrealistic with its cinematic smooth camera pans unlike anyone has ever played a game!

Demon's Souls suffered from unrealistic gameplay trailer footage too. Why did they have the HUD turned off? Why were they apparently OP and killing everything in one hit? It just annoys me

PS+ Collection sounds neat but I want to know more - like, what actually is it? Is it the start of a to be expanded gamepass like feature, or is it just a once-and-done collection of free PS4 games to play on PS5? The latter has almost no interest to me because I already own most of the games they showed and don't have any interest in the others!

The suggestion of higher game prices also makes no sense combined with the promise of free upgrades from PS4. So... just buy the cheaper PS4 version and upgrade every time. Idgi.

There's just no wow factor with this new generation :( The visual upgrade is the smallest its ever been and there aren't really any exclusives to try and get excited about

Yeah that's my main concern. Denster talks about people's reason for upgrading being reasonable or laughable but for me, it's not such an immediate upgrade. Getting a console at launch or in its first few months has always been a future-proofed purchase - there's nothing wrong with that - but this time more than ever, the "here and now" reasons, in November 2020, to own a next-gen console don't seem that compelling.

Moreso given that games are coming on PS4 too. Seeing as we've been forced into two tiers of consoles this generation anyway, I don't think a lot of people are going to mind playing stuff on the older consoles. I've moaned about two tiers before and people go on about "choice", but catering to all these different console tiers and making sure you can attract the widest install base is going to mean compromises at both ends - PS4 users are getting a downgrade, PS5 users are getting an enhanced PS4 game.

For me, more than ever, it feels like these new consoles are coming out just because. Because it's about that time in the cycle again. Because they earmarked Holiday 2020 ages ago and they want them out.

The Series S is still the more interesting purchase but it's telling that this due to the price point and the fact that I can finally play Xbox One titles I've missed out on.

Sony's Gamepass-style offering is still depressing naff. Japanese companies are slow on the uptake for stuff like this (far from a land of technical advances, it's a land where 90% of offices look like they are from the 1980s and use fax machines) and their excuses for not offering a full on service like MS is laughable, especially given they are locking customers to digital games. "Our games are too big budget for streaming" is bullshit.

My main concern with digital, when you don't have a compelling streaming service like Gamepass, is that you're locked in to Sony's store. This gen the digital offers are good, but I'm worried that commercial bullshit will take over and as the RRP is now, for some reason, £10 higher or whatever, then they are going to strawberry float us over with digital offers when we have no other choice but to buy from them.

I like MS's consumer-friendly stance of "no-one left behind", though do worry that it's going to lead to less significant, less rapid upgrades. Sony's claim of "we believe in generations" just strikes me as hot air, when it hardly seems like a generational upgrade. Feels more blatantly an attempt to sells us Brand New Stuff, it's here, right here, buy it now, magpies.

It's telling that my main reason for upgrading is still to play Destiny 2 on the new machines. Even then it's probably just an experience comparable to what PC players have had for ages.

Sony may well go with the game pass type model or merge plus and now. All it has committed to in that presentation is making several very good games free to download at launch. It's a sweetener. There's no additional cost if you're already a ps plus subscriber.
Its a generous offer.
The breadth and scope of PS4 BC remains to be seen. Digital only will end up costing you but quite a few people are doing this already. Sony is giving options for those who prefer it.

Sony has delivered for me with that presentation.

There's 2 or 3 good launch games that I want to play. There's a few in the pipeline in the near future. The price points are very competitive and a huge boost with the God of War news at the end.
Added to that for no additional cash I can play games I've enjoyed again (if I wish) and sample a few I haven't.

Compare it to the fairly bare bones of the ps4 launch and I'm very happy.

I don't doubt I'll pick one of these up eventually but there's doesn't seem to be a huge reason to rush out and pick one up before Chrimbo. Especially when being an early adopter is traditionally a risky venture from a hardware point of view.

Same goes for the XBox too.

Though I'll watch this eagerly because I can't remember the last time two consoles were launched with a Christmas head to head.

EDIT; strawberry floating literally with both these consoles predecessors.

I thought one of them missed Chrimbo last time.

Absolutely no need to buy one on launch. Will wait for early adopters to talk about noise etc.

I can see myself picking one up about Easter time . As it stands, I'll be going for a ps5

Little interest in this or the Series S / X to be honest. I sat through the presentation and saw a bunch of games i had no interes tin playing, and which looked distinctly similar to the many games i already have. My wife was sat next to me whilst i watched it, and i was wincing at how little diversity there was in the games on show, it was just one ultra violent fps/3rd person adventure after another.

If i was to go for a PS5 i would get the digital one. Very good price for all that technology, but i'm honestly more interested in the new Oculus Quest revision than any of this.

Maybe in 6 months time i will look more seriously in to the next gen, but right now there is not one game i want to play on either system at launch.

Who's awake this fine Thursday morning, ready to try and get a pre-order?

I did consider queuing outside my local GAME but realised I didn't want to get dressed or have to go out to a store in November to collect my PS5 which is in a public area good for robbing. So I'm online.

Both companies have kinda done a 180 on their previous claims, Xbox now only has one mainline exclusive that is cross gen with Halo, every other exclusive is next gen only. Sony 'believe' in generations but their 2 big exclusives are cross gen. I find it really strange that both companies have shifted positions.

Btw, Destiny 2 hits gamepass on Tuesday with all its DLC to date, it also gets a free Series X Upgrade to 4K/60fps at it's launch and Beyond Light is also hitting Gamepass day and date. This should increase it's population, and will benefit the game overall when it has cross play next year.

I didn’t anticipate game prices being the thing to give me pause about a launch purchase. Console price and launch lineup seem fine to me, but I just cannot justify 65 quid on game purchases. That’s insanity, 20 quid more than anything I pay now, except for the highest profile releases like Last of Us 2.

Echoing many here, I'm slightly underwhelmed and in no mad rush to buy anything for a while. Apart from Miles Morales and Demons Souls those launch games don't do much for me. For now, I'll happily play Miles on PS4 this Chrimbo and get the free souped up version later. Horizon and Ragnarok I'm excited about, but theres little incentive to be an early adopter.

As for the PS Plus Catalogue; other than Days Gone and Last Guardian I've played the other big hitters and have minimal interest in playing those I've completed already. So, yeah, I'll be waiting!

Another one taking a pass at this point. I've barely touched my PS4 in the last year or so to the point where it's been relegated to the 2nd TV. Xbox mainly gets used as a 4k player with an occasional gamepass game getting downloaded. I pretty much always play on Switch these days for the convenience. Might revisit one or other next gen console after christmas depending on what's looking interesting in Q1. If I go PS5 then I'll probably go for the one with the drive as I reckon I'll save the difference within a year or so on reduced pricing on retail games.
