Might wait for more information

Continuing in the grand old tradition of PlayStation copying everything Nintendo does, Sony today announced its own retro microconsole complete with 20 preloaded games.

Professional way to start a news article when SEGA did this whole thing years earlier...

I would bet that the success of Nintendo's minis was more of an influence on Sony at least, so "copying Nintendo's success" would probably be accurate.

The whole market research (which Sony commissioned in October 2017) was quite openly based around asking people if they would like to see Sony release a PSone mini, so the success of the Nintendo versions definitely woke Sony up to it: t:sony-begin-polling-gamers-on-the-idea-of-a-playstation-classic-mini?f=2&hilit=PlayStation+mini

This notion that Nintendo now almost owns the rights to re-releasing old machines is ridiculous though. Releasing retro classics has been going for years. I had a TV Boy in 1994...

Ridge Racer Type 4's soundtrack was godly

As was Tekken 3's

Not sure I'm going to bother with this one.

Between my PCs, PSs, Raspberry Pi, SNES Mini and GPD XD, I've got plenty of things I can plug into my TV, most of which can play PS games, and I don't hold the nostalgia for the PS1 that most do. I didn't get mine until the PSone launched.

Glad to see it's coming though.

Tony Hawk’s 2, WWF SmackDown 2 (which was re-released as WWE), and ISS Pro (more novelty/comedic factor that one) would be 3 more of my picks as well.

I mean look, we could happily be here all day. With just 20 titles there’s going to be disappointment.

Pretty much this - my ps3 and ps2 can play ps1 games, and i can run them on PCSXR through launchbox on pc (thanks devlin ) but its a cool thing. My only gripe is that these things preclude a more comprehensive backwards compatibility framework like on xbone.

I have to admit that I think I'd be the same. It's a lovely thing, but probably something that'd be on my shelf after a week. I could dig out my PS if I really wanted the nostalgia hit... but, yeah, it's still a cool idea.

That PS1 games don’t work on the PS4 is probably just coincidence, but what a lovely coincidence it’s turned out to be...for Sony.

Somewhere in a Sony boardroom,

‘Who wants to play all that old gooseberry fool, anyway...’
‘Shut up, Jim...’

Exactly, man. I wish I could play my PS1 discs on my PS4... with the performance upgrades that the Xbox gives to older games.

Didn't licencing issues prevent these from being released on the PS Store?

Gran Turismo has similar issues, but it really is essential, it's the best selling game on the system

Final Fantasy VII (9.72 million)

Either Sony are stalling on announcing all the games so they can drag out the hype over the coming weeks (makes sense) or the other games are so appalling they’re going to leave it to the last minute. Like the platformer ends up being Rascal.

I’m guessing anything with soundtracks will in fact prove to be difficult (or simply more expensive), unfortunately.

Hope Metal Gear Solid is on it. Could play that any time.

Anything with licenced music will be close to impossible as Rock Band shows. Especially for PS1 era games being so old. That's Tony Hawk's ruled out.

Gran Turismo would likely be the same, it's unlikely they could get back every licence found there and I doubt they'll be prepared to modify the game to take out what couldn't be relicenced.

Same for WWF. Although do you really associate that with PlayStation?

Spyro is unlikely with the new rerelease. Crash probably as well.

Tomb Raider, Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid are probably givens.

Thinking about it, Gran Turismo was sold quite heavily on the basis of its analogue controls, and coupled with the fact Sony would presumably have to relicense every car and song in the game, I can’t see it being included.

I remember all my friends buying it (some illegally) at launch at school and I don't think any of them had Dual Shocks.

Main boasting points were the realistic graphics, real cars with modification and the music (Garbage, Ash, Manic Street Preachers etc...)

I can see why it didn't appear on the half-assed PlayStayion Store Classics selection, but for something like this you've got to put effort into ensuring the essentials are on there.

Wild Arms and Jumping Flash taking up 2 of the 20 available slots is bewildering.
