Has EG's take on the system been posted?

If not, here it is:

I had the original dash from 1995 and then the PSone version from 2001 (which had the Microsoft Media Player style graphics when you played music).

Interesting choice of box art on that carousel. Those aren't the covers I had for Cool Boarders 2 or Destruction Derby for example, so I'm guessing that's the American versions. So they've gone with American box art but still given us the European releases?

It's been reported it uses PCSX reARMed for the emulator so you're missing nothing just emulating with a dual shock 4.

Not that there's a single thing wrong with that emulator, but at least running your own setup you get to use the NTSC versions if you want.

That's mad if true - "hey guys, plz pay £90 for a freely available emulator with less functionality and a limited library" .

It’s never a guarantee that a plug-and-play system like this will get the emulation right, but from my time jumping around between the PlayStation Classic’s games, it seems like this part is good enough. The games look and sound accurate, their mid-90s jagged pixels looking like you could grate a block of cheese with them. (A listing of licenses for open-source software accessible in the PlayStation Classic’s menu said that it uses the open-source PlayStation emulator PCSX ReARMed.)

It's open source and good. But still amusing.

Yeah I have a PSTV and basically just from buying PS1 games during sales to play on it and on my ps3 I have about 30 titles without even worrying about hacking. I grabbed myself one and my daughter one from a pawn store back when they had a bunch they were trying to get rid of, they started selling them at £25 each and when I grabbed ours they were doing them for £15 a piece... If I knew then what I do now I think id have grabbed 3 or 4 spares

Ooh good effort! Though if you'll permit me to be an insufferable pedant, Intelligent Qube is on the UK PSN under its localised name "Kurushi" for £3.99

This video really sold me on it, I love the bizarrely ominous atmosphere:

I love the idea of these mini / classic consoles but, for me personally, the little niggles and drawbacks have put me off getting any of them. I am still excited to see if an N64 version arrives but this enthusiasm is tempered by what has come before. I'm starting to think that I'd prefer a good "virtual console" style approach on current systems but this format seems to be out of fashion.

These classic console and game packages resonate with old-time gamers by tapping into feelings of nostalgia. The SNES Mini works for me because I have been able to play some great games that I never had the chance to back in the day and the 2D aesthetic gives them a cartoon more ageless quality. The PS1 Classic look cute, but its 3D graphics that were cutting edge at the time now look more dated than 2D. The PS Classic has minimal upscaling, no ability to add ROMS, and uses the open source emulator naturally make you ask 'why not do it yourself?' But what it does well is be an all-in-one package that requires no set-up for playing classic PS1 games - so will be a draw for many.

I'd prefer a Virtual Console option too so maybe this will come to PS5 and Switch.

Some of my work colleagues are baffled by emulators and roms, (it's an avenue they've never felt inclined to explore), so it's easy to see why the PS Classic might appeal. One guy has it pre-ordered and is quite excited by the prospect. Our resident "PC master race" fool gave him a ribbing for 'wasting £90' (as he put it) so I stepped in and turned the conversation on a more positive note. I said to him that if he enjoys his PS Classic, and as a result he wants to revisit more PS titles, I could help him get his head around emulation on his lap top. That way he could keep the Classic nice and new while still having the option to play PS1 games via emulation. He seemed quite happy with that plan.

Have they said if the Resident Evil 2 demo is also part of this? I noticed it features on the box art they’ve used:

Image

There is box art where that red splat isn’t there. Though it’s ineligable this one also says “$5 off coupon towards Resident Evil 2” underneath.

I would imagine its not and they have just been lazy and used whatever box art they could easily download and not thought about the fact it says that.

I just spent about £12 on the PSN store and got a load more PS1 games for the vita/ps3/ Vita TV I have.

Crash Bandicoot 1,2 and 3
Spyro 1,2 and 3
Metal Gear solid
Silent Hill
and Crash Team Racing

Add those 9 to the 30 odd I already own from sales and I probably already have a better set up than the PS Classic. If you want any of these to do simmilar then hurry they all go off sale latter tonight, unfortunately Rainbow 6 is not on sale so you still need a classic for that.

A while back I grabbed the first 3 Tomb Raider games, RE 1, 2 & 3, Silent Hill, Medieval, FFIX, Alundra, Destruction Derby and Pandemonium 2 for a pittance via PSN.

To be honest I would recommend trying to buy off the US PSN if you can, the vast majority of the UK PSN PS1 Classics are 50Hz. There are exceptions (RE2-3, Spyro, Tomba, Klonoa, Alundra and any JP only imports off the top of my head) but the vast majority will be affected. The RPGs can be especially brutal for this:

Is a shame as this becomes a pain when swapping accounts on PSP+Vita, where the PS1 Classics really shine the best. Had a blast going through MGS1, RE1-3, Castlevania: SoTN and FF7 for the first time several years back on PSP :)
