Yeah I grabbed all of the tomb raiders awhile ago for 99p each on there and the resident evils where silly cheap if you got all 3. Destruction derby is £1.19 now was going to grab it but apparently I already did at some point.

I just cancelled my pre-order. So many glaring omissions.

Is a shame as this becomes a pain when swapping accounts on PSP+Vita, where the PS1 Classics really shine the best. Had a blast going through MGS1, RE1-3, Castlevania: SoTN and FF7 for the first time several years back on PSP :)

On the Giant Bomb Cast they were saying that the American version uses the European roms for some reason.

To that:

These are the NTSC versions of the original releases, except the following which are the PAL versions: Battle Arena Toshinden, Cool Boarders 2, Destruction Derby, Grand Theft Auto, Jumping Flash!, Oddoworld: Abe’s Oddysee, Resident Evil Director’s Cut, Tekken 3, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six

https://blog.eu.playstation.com/2018/11 ... er-launch/

If those aren't forced to 60hz... :dread: Granted that may not work in cases where the games were optimized but I know Resident Evil and Tekken 3 at the very least definitely weren't, I suspect Battle Arena Toshinden and a few other early titles weren't either.

Amusingly this would make this a very rare case of US folks getting 50Hz releases, only other case I can think of is them getting the PAL Vib Ribbon as a PSN PS1 download

I'd like nothing more than to tell you that the PS Classic is a pleasant surprise, that it will match your excitement and then some. This sadly isn't the case, and short of Sony refreshing it, or the hacking community breaking it open and reconfiguring it, the PS Classic may never be more than a puny PlayStation with good looks.

Just last year, a PlayStation executive went on the record to ask why anyone would still want to play these “ancient” games. Clearly, Sony at large believes people would. But instead of a PlayStation Classic that really celebrates the shared love for this bygone era of games, it’s a product that feels like it was delivered in the spirit of “Oh, you guys still like these old games? Well, here this is, we guess.” The PlayStation’s games are still beautiful, but the wrapping around them is something like putting a Picasso into an $8.99 plastic frame.

Apparently, Tekken 3 has frame rate problems too. This is the NA version too.

Cancelled my pre-order, 50Hz Tekken 3 is the last straw.

Shame, was really hyped for this when it was announced.

Be interesting to see how many people have cancelled a pre-order based on the additional games being announced.

A real missed opportunity.

You can see it running on the Classic at 1:40 -

God it's hard to watch, underwater Tekken D: Not to mention more juddery with every fifth frame being repeated

Also I'd like to put forth the argument that the PAL version of Rainbow Six on these things is the most useless data ever committed to flash memory

I've still got mine on pre order from Amazon, but massively disappointing that this isn't anywhere near as good as it could and should have been (especially hearing that the emulator Sony is using has many additional options and improvements available).

50Hz doesn't bother me because I won't know any better, but if games run worse than their EU disc based copies then that's really shambolic. I don't recall Tekken 3 having any framerate issues, but then maybe it did?

If you want the best PS1 experience you're better off buying the actual discs on eBay or downloading the games from PSN and using the PS3 (which has the same features as the PS2 in terms of boosting load times and smoothing graphics). In some cases, the Dual Shock 3 dramatically improves the controls too because PS1 has inferior, heavier analogue sticks. Or in comparison to the Classic, analogue sticks.

Has Sony actually done the software in-house or has it been farmed out on the cheap?

Whelp, it gets worse; even the NTSC titles aren't safe

Eurogamer write up

It seems performance and frame timing in general is an issue, the writeup of Jumping Flash speaks of it having a 30% reduction in fps over the original NTSC version

Most to all games from that era tied game logic to frame rate, so often in NTSC-PAL conversions games ran slower since that's 10 frames less per second to execute actions. The version of Tekken 3 on the Classic not only will run about 18% slower than it should, it'll be juddery since the Classic's output is otherwise at 60hz and so every fifth frame has to be duplicated. It'll be the same speed as you remember it on PAL but noticeably less smooth

Wow, that's really inexcusable. Taking games that already look shonky on a HDTV and making them run even worse. :fp:

Judder drives me mental when watching football on NowTV.

However, it's understood that proprietary emulation developed by Sony itself was used on those systems, while the small print suggests that the PlayStation Classic uses a mobile port of the PCSX emulator instead.

I really don't understand this decision at all.

And not exactly something Sony can patch since I'm hearing nothing about any online connectivity.

At least the PlayStation Classic will look nice on my desk with my PS1 branded mug and a miniature statue of Parappa the Rapper*.

I shall endeavour to tell everyone on Monday if they've strawberry floated up Destruction Derby, which is obviously the main issue here.

*which I don't have. Kick, punch, it's all in the mind.

The worst part is that even if it's hacked it seems that the emulation itself is poor so even putting new ROMs on it things will still be worse, unless the hacks can basically patch/replace some of the emulation config.
