https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2018-playstation-classic-emulation-first-look

Remarkably, even the NTSC games have issues. You can see that with the performance snapshot of R4 Ridge Racer Type 4 embedded below. Original hardware runs this title locked at 30fps with perfect frame-pacing - a new frame is delivered every two screen refreshes without fail. Running under emulation on the PlayStation Classic, not only are frames delivered with 'blips' adding some stutter, but there also appear to be performance dips too - which do not occur in the game running on original hardware. So even if Sony had delivered a full NTSC line-up, we'd still have problems with this product falling short of the quality delivered by the actual PlayStation.

I can only guess that Sony has rushed this out the door because they wanted it on sale this Christmas, with next year’s focus clashing with something else (whether that be a slimmed down PS4 Pro or PS5).

Strange to me how they can do so well with the packaging and design of the machine and just half arse the software so spectacularly. Every game included should absolutely be a hit, but I don’t think the game line-up overall is bad either. But it becomes bad when they’re seemingly such poor conversions.

Compared to how Nintendo and more recently Microsoft treat their classic games (or even the hardware; you can’t say MS and its partners didn’t do a good job bringing back The Brute controller) this is a cynical and embarrassing effort from Sony. Even SEGA did better than this...

I've warned the Mrs not to buy me one of these.

Bullets dodged like neo in the matrix. I'd rather buy a posh cable for my actual PlayStation than this guff.

Classic Sony games, classic Sony arrogance.

Watching the giant bomb video where they go through every game a lot of these have aged horribly regardless of performance.

Who on earth wants to spend more than ten minutes on coolboarders 2 or destruction Derby 1?

Will be interesting to see how this sells. It’s currently back in stock at all online retailers (GAME, Amazon, Very, Shopto, AO, HMV, Littlewoods, Box, The Game Collection) so either it’s doing terribly (I’d be very surprised if that were the case in Europe) or Sony has stocked this incredibly well. Zero chance of eBayers making any money on it.

A couple more reviews,

3/5 from Techradar:

Because it doesn’t enshrine the best-remembered games from the ’90s, the PlayStation Classic isn’t quite everything we hoped it’d be. But what it lacks in software is made up, in part, by its lovingly crafted hardware. What's there is a collection of titles that you can enjoy in an afternoon but probably won't be coming back to anytime after that.

FOR
Two controllers in every box
Some interesting game choices
Built-in memory cards

AGAINST
Some games didn’t age well
Limitations on resume points
Limited nostalgia factor

https://www.techradar.com/uk/reviews/pl ... on-classic

4/5 from Stuff:

If you've lived and breathed PlayStation since the very first console helped revolutionise gaming, then rejoice: Sony's PlayStation Classic nails all of the aesthetic details while reviving some of the most legendary games of all time.

On the other hand, the full game lineup is spotty and some of the picks feel inessential, especially considering the games that didn't make the cut. It's not nearly as impressive of a collection as last year's brilliant Nintendo Classic Mini: SNES. If you don't see a strong handful of games that you're itching to play, then you might consider keeping your £90 and dropping it on a couple of PS4 games instead.

Otherwise, let the retro bliss wash over you with another tiny console to join your growing armada of shrunken flashback machines.

GOOD STUFF
This tiny PSX is ultra-adorable
Revives some legendary games
Controllers are sturdy and responsive

BAD STUFF
Some baffling picks in the lineup
Missing many key 32-bit classics
Very short controller cables

Did you threaten her with violence?

I think the most important lesson we can learn from this sorry debacle, is that Sony's legacy is second rate compared to the glory of Nintendo's legacy which is much better.

Once again, good has triumphed over evil. :datass:

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

GamesRadar:

But what’s really strange, is the presentation. Whereas the NES and SNES Classic Mini manage to fill the full vertical length of the screen leaving a black bar of TV screen either side, the PlayStation Classic has black bars around all four edges of your game. This takes you back to the days of chunky CRT televisions, but it does look incredibly odd - and detracts from the overall immersion of this wayback machine experience. This is likely a technical problem with the games as they existed back in the late '90s / early 2000s, but really does look incredibly odd.

I'm tempted to cancel my order and get Hit Man 2.

Kind of surprised at only 1GB of RAM.
I do wonder how much storage will be left though, some.of the games are multi-disc after all, so honestly I don't think there'll be much free space at all of it just has 16GB.
Honestly I think you'll be lucky to fit 2 more ISOs on it.

Glad I cancelled my pre-order, this will be kicking about much reduced in price in a year I'd imagine.

Hopefully Sony learn their lesson and do a much better job with the PS2 classic...
