PostPlayStation VR 2 - Blog post announcements for specs and Horizon Call of the Mountain teaser
by Saint of Killers » Tue Feb 23, 2021 5:30 pm

More than four years ago, we launched PlayStation VR to offer a transformative new way to play games on PS4, providing a much stronger sense of presence and deeper immersion to players compared with traditional games. In that time, we’ve seen tremendous experiences that have propelled virtual reality gaming forward, including highly acclaimed titles like Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, Tetris Effect, Blood & Truth, Moss, Beat Saber, and Resident Evil 7 biohazard. We’ve also enhanced the experience for some PS VR titles when played on PS4 Pro and PlayStation 5.

Today I’m pleased to share that our next-generation VR system will be coming to PlayStation 5, enabling the ultimate entertainment experience with dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity. Players will feel an even greater sense of presence and become even more immersed in their game worlds once they put on the new headset.

We’re continuing to innovate with our new VR system so that our fans can continue to enjoy the unique experiences that are synonymous with PlayStation. We’re taking what we’ve learned since launching PS VR on PS4 to develop a next-gen VR system that enhances everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input. It will connect to PS5 with a single cord to simplify setup and improve ease-of-use, while enabling a high-fidelity visual experience.

One of the innovations we’re excited about is our new VR controller, which will incorporate some of the key features found in the DualSense wireless controller, along with a focus on great ergonomics. That’s just one of the examples of future-proof technology we’re developing to match our vision for a whole new generation of VR games and experiences.

There’s still a lot of development underway for our new VR system, so it won’t be launching in 2021. But we wanted to provide this early update to our fans, as the development community has started to work on creating new worlds for you to explore in virtual reality.

We also want to thank all of our PS VR players for your continued support — with upcoming games like After The Fall, Sniper Elite VR, and Humanity, there’s much more to come for PS VR whether you’re playing on PS4 or PS5. With both PlayStation VR and the next-generation VR system we’re building, our commitment to virtual reality as a medium for games is stronger than ever. We look forward to sharing more details in the future!

I'm almost as hyped for this as I was for next gen consoles. It's a shame it's not wireless, but hopefully the connection will be a more elegant solution than it was for the original PSVR :dread: What I'm most looking forward to is the bump in the fidelity of the graphics, and the improved VR controls. (There was a PSVR controller patent knocking about online last year. Will post it if I can find it.)

PlayStation’s Jim Ryan: ‘We’re making a completely new VR format for PS5’

Hmm. Doesn't say a lot about PSVR 2 except it's "a completely new VR format". I hope that doesn't mean it won't be backward compatible...

I'm patiently waiting for VR to be more streamlined and accessible because I genuinely think it's going to be a big part of games as tech develops. This might be the first time I invest in VR. If Sony is promising to support it then I'm def gonna try to hop on this.

Really interested to see what this turns out to be, I have not invested into VR at all but it seems a neat idea, just waiting for those killer apps.

Surprised its wired, I'd have thought they would have gone wireless. The only thing I'm bothered with though is the resolution, as PSVR1 I found far too blurry which only added to the motion sickness I suffered.

I'd play my PSVR far more if the tracking was up to snuff. It's dire and spoils the experience.

It really does. I have abandoned my PSVR for Quest now, but i still miss many of the PS exclusives (and the games that require the extra oomph that the Quest / Q2 does not provide).

Wireless is proving to be a big draw for me, not because i can run around the west wing of my house, but because i can quickly set up and play in the living room / bedroom depending on what room is not being used. I still think PSVR2 would be more appealing than Quest.... 4?!? as the type of games it will be able to run will far exceed the Quest rnage in native mode (no PC here).

So for me, its great news. It also helps justify me buying a PS5, which has been tricky for me as a Series X owner.

Exactly what I get. I was paying GT sport the other week and only part of it is in VR, so I was playing the main game in the cinema screen type view. Couldn't make it half a lap without having to look all the way left to see straight on. Eventually I realised it's because in the cinema mode, for some stupid reason the only tracking lights that get switched on are the two on the rear of the headband, all the front ones are off. It just uses the gyro to guess where you're looking and goes miles off all the time. Go to the proper VR mode in the same game, and on come the lights and the tracking goes back to normal. Still gooseberry fool compared to my Vive, but better.

Following the recent reveal of our next-generation virtual reality system for PS5, I’m excited to unveil more details about the new controller that will play a critical role in providing gamers with the VR experience we’re working to deliver. Our new VR controller speaks to our mission of achieving a much deeper sense of presence and stronger feeling of immersion in VR experiences. It will build upon the innovation we introduced with the DualSense wireless controller, which changed how games “feel” on PS5 by unlocking a new way to tap into the sense of touch. Now we’re bringing that innovation to VR gaming.

Design

The first thing you’ll notice with our next-gen VR controller is the unique design, which takes on an “orb” shape that allows you to hold the controller naturally, while playing with a high degree of freedom. There are no constraints with how you’re moving your hands, providing developers with the ability to create unique gameplay experiences.

We also designed the new controller with great ergonomics in mind, so it’s well-balanced and comfortable to hold in each of your hands. We applied learnings from testing users with a range of hand sizes, as well as the decades of insights from controllers across all PlayStation platforms. The result is an iconic design that will change how VR games are played.

Features

The new VR controller enables players to feel and interact with games in a much more visceral way. There are several features, including key features from the DualSense controller, which match our vision for what next-generation VR games can be.

● Adaptive triggers: Each VR controller (Left and Right) includes an adaptive trigger button that adds palpable tension when pressed, similar to what’s found in the DualSense controller. If you’ve played a PS5 game, you’ll be familiar with the tension in the L2 or R2 buttons when you press them, such as when you’re drawing your bow to fire an arrow. When you take that kind of mechanic and apply it to VR, the experience is amplified to the next level.

● Haptic feedback: The new controller will have haptic feedback optimized for its form factor, making every sensation in the game world more impactful, textured and nuanced. When you’re traversing through rocky desert or trading blows in melee combat, you’ll feel the difference, magnifying the extraordinary visual and audio experience that’s so central to VR.

● Finger touch detection: The controller can detect your fingers without any pressing in the areas where you place your thumb, index, or middle fingers. This enables you to make more natural gestures with your hands during gameplay.

● Tracking: The VR controller is tracked by the new VR headset through a tracking ring across the bottom of the controller.

● Action buttons / analog sticks: The Left controller contains one analog stick, the triangle and square buttons, a “grip” button (L1), trigger button (L2) and Create button. The Right controller contains one analog stick, the cross and circle buttons, a “grip” button (R1), trigger button (R2) and Options button. The “grip” button can be used to pick up in-game objects, as one example.

SIE’s Product, Engineering, and Design teams have collaborated to build our new VR controller from the ground up with a goal of making a huge leap from current-gen VR gaming. We’re thrilled with the controller we developed, but what matters now is how game creators will take advantage of the features to design the next generation of VR experiences. Prototypes of our new VR controller will be in the hands of the development community soon, and we can’t wait to see what ideas they come up with and how the controller helps bring their imagination to life!

There’s still much more to share about the next-generation of VR on PS5. On behalf of all of us at SIE, I want to thank you for taking this journey with us!

Sony’s next-generation VR headset for PlayStation 5 has significantly higher resolution, inside-out tracking, a vibration motor, and even foveated rendering, reliable sources tell UploadVR.

We don’t yet know the product’s name, but multiple sources tell us Sony shared details with partners. Those details include a resolution of 4000×2080 pixels (2000×2040 per eye), a lens separation adjustment dial, and gaze tracking capable of foveated rendering. A motor in the headset can be used by developers to give direct haptic feedback.

Sony previously confirmed it is developing a next-generation wired VR headset for PS5 to release sometime after 2021, and revealed the controllers for the upcoming device with analog sticks and finger position sensing, plus resistive triggers that can push back at your fingers when pressed, as seen in the PS5’s own DualSense controller.

Next Generation Sony VR

The resolution of the upcoming Sony headset is slightly less than HP Reverb G2 (the current market leader in consumer VR headset resolution) and slightly more than the Oculus Quest 2. The resolution should amount to roughly 8.3 million total pixels, just slightly more than what’s provided by a full 4K display, though of course that’s half per eye. The new VR headset will use a USB Type-C connection between the console and headset. The PlayStation 5 features a single USB-C port on the front of the device.

The new Sony headset will use its onboard cameras to track the position of the new controllers, thereby simplifying setup dramatically compared to the current generation and unlocking more movement freedom for the player.

Teaser starts at 1min 25s.

With only a few more weeks to go until Horizon Forbidden West (launching February 18, 2022), we’re thrilled to reveal that we’ll soon be journeying back out into the wilds in a brand-new adventure, with Horizon Call of the Mountain.

Created for PlayStation VR2, this unique experience has been designed to push hardware technology, innovation, and gameplay. The stunning visuals and brand-new PS VR2 Sense controllers give a new meaning to being fully immersed into the world of Horizon.

We don’t want to reveal too much just yet, but this story will be told through the eyes of an entirely new character. You will also meet Aloy, other familiar faces, and new characters along the way, and we’ll be introducing you to the protagonist of Horizon Call of the Mountain soon.

We’re looking forward to welcoming VR fans into our wonderful Horizon community, and giving you all an unforgettable experience. Horizon Call of the Mountain has been proudly developed with the team at Firesprite, and we’ll soon be revealing more about what you can expect from the game. Until then, check out the teaser trailer!

Word is that devs are being asked to patch their old PSVR games to work with the PSVR2 controller. So there likely won't be out of the box BC between PSVR2 and PSVR :(

After experiencing PSVR, this PSVR 2 is a big factor in why I selected the PS5 for this new console gen. Really excited to see how the single cord and increased resolution boost the experience... but I am a touch apprehensive about the cost for the headset and controllers!

Some games don't use the PSVR controllers right - so Astrobot would likely be fine? That's basically what I care about not missing out on!

Astrobot uses the controller, but also uses the camera and the light bar on the front to track it, so that won't work either.

I wonder if PSVR 2 will release this year? I'm thinking it could do, with Sony having shared this new info. Maybe it'll launch in November?

I think this could be a good way of helping me buy fewer games during this year. Gotta try and save some cash in order to get PSVR 2!

PSVR was terrific - definitely my stand-out experience of last gen - but I didn't play it *that much*; I found that it was something I'd dip into now and again. I think this was predominantly because of the space required but also because the effect was a little tiring; I got hot and couldn't play for long. Hopefully this new version will be a little more comfortable for longer periods.

I'd hope I can use PSVR2 on my PS5 with a PS4 controller to play Astrobot... but I'm guessing that won't be the case, even though it should be.

Honestly if it can't play Astrobot then I might not get one! That's the game I really want to play on PSVR, but also I don't want to buy a PSVR because it is very expensive for relatively few games and will be succeeded. PSVR2 having the back catalogue of PSVR and its own upcoming library was what I was imagining would push me over the edge, that doesn't work if it isn't backwards compatible.

I'd like to think there'd be a sequel. It really is a wonderful game.

I'm with Jawa - the possibility of PSVR2 is what has stopped me jumping in with a next gen console yet. Very interested to see how it pans out.

I always forget how much a love VR until i dip back into it. The last couple of days i have been playing Vacation Simulator on Quest 2. It's such a simple premise but so enjoyable.

Anyway, I think i would be in on day 1 for PSVR 2. The wireless aspect of the Quest 2 is a huge thing for me, but only really as it allows me to play in one of a couple of rooms (depending on which one is not being used). I could see PSVR 2 being the one I choose for those more resouce intensive PC VR games I currently have no access to.

Honestly, I had written off PSVR 2 being BC with all my PSVR "1" games, but if some were to get a patch (for less than £10 each, ideally), that would be an added bonus.
