For some reason I have been listening to “Stone Clearing with Richard Herring”.

Quite honestly it is the weirdest thing I have ever listened to.

I spent the past month binging all of reply all, incredible journalism about the internet.

This is definitely on my list.

This year I've really taken my appreciation of Athletico Mince to a new level, binging on all the old episodes during their Bob mandated absence earlier in the year. I continue to love Hardcore History too, and the Waypoint podcast contains some of the most interesting stuff being said about games. As well as Reply All I also need to dig into Citations Needed, Death, Sex and Money, Love + Radio (used to love it, but stopped listening for no reason at all) and should really start listening to The Moth again.

On the other hand I've completely dropped away from My Dad Wrote a Porno. It's become too obviously scripted now, and the idea has run its course I think. Nothing in the third season has come close to the pomegranates reveal of the first.

Started listening to Generation Why and Paraphrase.

Generation Why is a show looking at true crimes and the people that commit them. Paraphrase is a literary podcast where the host interviews authors about their work and their inspirations.

Started Teacher's Pet today. It's kind of an Australian version of Serial, studying a long unsolved crime (which has had some recent progress and news coverage).

The gist is, one day a loving mother of two suddenly disappears without a word to anybody. The husband is eventually made the prime suspect but the murder is never pinned on him. The case is studied in the podcast and unearths new evidence that could prove crucial is determining what happened.

Just started listening to the 13 minutes to the moon podcast and it's very, very good. Some really incredible bits of insight into the first moon landing. It's a definite recommendation from me.

The Ron Burgundy Podcast is my new favourite. It's so silly.

I've had to stop Adam Buxton podcast because I want to read Catcher in the Rye before I listen to the episode dedicated to it.

Funnily enough I stopped Buckles there for the same reason.

I've been enjoying 'David Tennant Does a Podcast With...' recently too, it's got a lovely homey vibe, and the one with Whoopi Goldberg was particularly interesting.

I’ve been listening to The Rewatchables. It’s an American podcast where a group of people discuss rewatchable movies, Die Hard, Top Gun, Speed, Point Break etc. It’s pretty funny and they make some interesting points on some of the most popular movies ever made.

So Pocketcast, which I paid for as a premium podcast player, is now going freemium, with a subscription model for the desktop app, storage, and custom themes.

On top of this, lock screen controls have totally disappeared, meaning if I want to pause an episode, I now have to unlock my phone, and tab over to the app, rather than just be able to tap the screen to wake and hit pause.

Anyone got recommendations for another player?

I use Overcast. It works well enough but I don’t know if it is available on Android.

Ta, hadn't realised they had their own app. Don't think it was around last time I was looking for a player. Surprised it took Google that long to launch their own player.

I used to use Beyond Pod which was good enough but switched to pocketcast as I heard it's better, but tbh, I use them in the most basic sense. So will just switch back to Beyond Pod.

I've had it for about a year I guess. I haven't used any others before so can't compare it to a premium player, but all I need it to do is tell me when there's a new podcast out, let me listen to it, and then mark that one as played so I don't forget and try and listen to it again months down the road.

What sort of things would a premium player do over and above the basics?
