Anyone Arceus was much better, and deserved to sell much better. Borderline criminal that it didn't.

I wonder if the timing didn't help it. It came out in January, which is hardly a month for big releases, missing the Christmas period. And it came out barely two months after BDSP.

They announced SV like less than a month after as well.

But that would have meant Game Freak actually putting time and effort into a game.

I bought this and started playing it yesterday on top of SP and Violet. My god this game feels like something special. It took me ages to figure out how to switch what Pokemon I had in my party so I was stuck with a team of like 4 bidoofs for ages lmao. I'm 5 hours in or so now and the world when you compare it to violet is simply beautiful. It's seemingly not as large but what it makes up for in lack of space everything just looks and runs so much better.

Battle wise I think I prefer Violet so far, but I'm enjoying my time with this a lot!

I think that's fair, worse battle system but better everything else!

I wouldn’t say everything is better in Legends Arceus than the battling (which was ok for the most part but some fights the AI seemed to be able to execute agile and strong style moves perfectly).

I’d say SV has a better dex, having Koraidon/Miraidon doing all the HM moves naturally is better (plus getting to know them throughout the game is neat), I just wish we’d get proper flying (or soaring like in ORAS) rather than falling with style (and then plummeting in SV), I’d say the main quest line is marginally better in SV too, for Pokémon games I really enjoyed both games main quests and the plethora of side quests in LA so no complaints about either really.

Legends Arceus is by far the better looking and performing game though, it just makes it more annoying that they rush games out to continue the money printing trend Pokémon continues to be. BDSP could have been better if they’d had some input from Game Freak for a few months and maybe been given platinum content, LA could have been better if that had come out November 2022 with an extra 10 months focus, SV would have been far better (performance if nothing else) if that came out in 2023 with an extra year being focused on it.

So far I'm pretty much in agreement. The dex in S/V feels more fleshed out, although the dex in Arceus has a lot more to do in it. I'd say I enjoyed the story a lot in S/V but I haven't really seen the bulk of Arceus yet, but the overworld in Arceus and the design of everything just feels much more pretty at every stage of the game so far.

The Pokemon models especially and the shaders/materials they've used on the Pokemon themselves make everything a lot more vibrant than in S/V which in some cases feel pretty washed out colours wise. I think both are great games and if they could actually sit, use time and make a game that looks and runs as good as Arceus with gameplay as good as S/V it'd be the best Pokemon game possibly ever.

"When you compare it to violet" doing a lot of heavy lifting! Maybe this was Game Freak's plan all along, release a game that looks as shoddy as SV to trick people into thinking Arceus looks good

The pokemon models are good - but then they are also good in SV, it's the one aspect of the visuals that (understandably imo) gets the most attention.

The Pokémon themselves look great in SV, they look really good in LA too though. I’d say the environments are better in LA though, except maybe the water texture from a distance as that was laughably bad in LA. I still think there’s the odd moment in SV when the sunlight is just right that it looks reasonably nice though.

Hot take: everybody concentrating on the graphics detracts from the actually important things that are wrong with both games. :capnscotty:

For the majority of games, really nice graphics should be a nice bit of top of a well performing and designed game that’s fun to spend your time in. For myself LA and SV are very enjoyable so while I can kind of overlook the performance issues SV has its still a fun game in my opinion and one that I’ll continue to spend a lot of time with, with the relatively average graphics there is no reason it should struggle like it does at points though.

What do you see as the important things wrong with both games then? One of my main issues is with how quickly they pump the games out to the detriment of quality, this has suddenly become even more apparent with SV with how poor it feels in areas but it’s not like previous games have been faultless in this area too, the wild area was poor in SS, the 3DS in general seemed to struggle with a lot of double battles you encountered too.

Yes, because the AI knows how the game works, the player must learn too.

That's absolutely the main problem, and the graphics are a symptom of that, not the root issue. It also resulted in SV having really terrible towns, a litany of glitches (Pokémon getting stuck in walls happens in both games), things being omitted for no obvious reason (where's the set battle style? Where's the ability to choose the level of battle animation?), and I think it probably actually contributed to the open world being a bit duff. There was a lack of interesting verticality for much of the game compared to Legends, Kor/Miraidon's navigation abilities didn't feel as fun as the rideable 'Mon in that game, and the three routes did nothing for me. An illusion of freedom that's stripped away as soon as you look at the lack of dynamic levels. There were also some aspects removed from Arceus that made Arceus much better: the Pokémon tasks and catching from the wild were the big two.

As for Arceus, I thought that was a huge step in the right direction that got needlessly shouted down because the trees weren't all that. For me the simplified battle system, the paucity of good new monsters (although it's super-daft that Paldea has Stantler and Ursaring but not their evolutions), an inconsistent approach to bordering the worlds meaning I constantly ran into 'You cannot go any further' pop-ups that broke the immersion, and some outright bad side-quests were the problems there.

I will say that the performance in SV reached eye-hurting levels of jitter at times, but that's the only major graphical issue I had with either game - and again, that's a symptom of the root issue, which is exactly as you describe it above.

Of course the major problem is that the Daybreak update hasn't been out today for several months Milner. :capnscotty:

Credits rolled, what an awesome little story.

Still tons to do and again I know some of the textures are a little iffy but I really love how vivid everything looks in this. The colours are so much better than S/V.

Glad you enjoyed, have you got your Shaymin and Darkrai yet? Not that you need them to catch Arceus but a neat little bonus that’s annoyingly locked behind the player having BDSP and SS save data on their Switch.

Not yet, I haven't got any of the Legendaries other than the 2 you get to finish the story.

I'm 211/242 caught now with most of them having their entries completed. Getting so close.

Slowly getting there then, some of the evolution methods in this are a bit out there as well if I’m honest so I’ve no idea if any of those will be some of the ones you’re missing or not. I really enjoyed hunting down all the legendary and mythical stuff at the end.

That's every Pokemon caught bar one I need from a time distortion (also need 3 more to complete the living dex but they're in a different area). I think I need to finish the Alolan Vulpix quest to get one of those as well if I want the living dex fully fully completed then it's just the legendaries left.

Got all the purple orbs and unowns last night and this morning and finally got enough FP to buy one of the evolution items I needed. 70hours in or so now and almost there!

One just spawned in the area I need it. Praying that I get the pokemon in.

If not I'm going to get the pokemon from Home. :shifty:

EDIT: GOT IT!

EDIT: Got a second one too, that's my living dex sorted for that one. :toot: :toot: :toot:
