The focus on that one town also made me fearful that it might be the only major settlement in the game, a la Skyloft :dread:

I thought they said that was the only town/settlement.

https://kotaku.com/pokemon-legends-arceus-is-clearly-not-going-to-be-open-1847817836

Update, 10/8/2021, 6:00 p.m. ET: The Pokémon Company has sent Kotaku a statement confirming the Monster Hunter-esque structure of Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Jubilife Village will serve as the base for surveying missions. After receiving an assignment or a request and preparing for their next excursion, players will set out from the village to study one of the various open areas of the Hisui region. After they finish the survey work, players will need to return once more to prepare for their next task. We look forward to sharing more information about exploring the Hisui region soon.

Yeah, it’s not open World really, more like Monster Hunter.

And I can honestly say I'm not surprised.

To be honest, that sounds fine to me.

Yeah that’ll be fine to me, imagine the areas are still going to be of a reasonable size like Monster Hunter with plenty to see and find. Performance shouldn’t be as much of an issue if its not fully open world either.

Nothing wrong with that structure, but I'm not sold on Jubilife. Monster Hunter Rise's Kamura Village is packed with excellent characters that all feel real and part of a living society, that makes the village a fun place to be.

From what they showed in the trailer with base camps and at one point what looked like a region selection screen, I was more getting the vibe of MH World style open, large-scale environments to go to for specific missions (and actually feel like that might work better than fully open world tbh)

What shall I use my gift of prophecy for next

Yeah, Jubilife looks extremely flat and bland/clinical compared to pretty much any MH hub location, they all manage to make it seem like a place that's lived-in and characterful rather than just a collection of buildings

There are loads of great RPGs that only have that one village you venture out from: Monster Hunter, Alundra, Zelda, Crystal Chronicles, Diablo, Phantasy Star Online, Destiny, Stardew Valley to name but a few.

Maybe they will give us a house or room to customise along with the other gameplay elements? I always quite like that sort of feature.

Eh?

The only Zelda with one settlement is the only one that isn't a "great RPG".

(Unless you're talking about a 2D Zelda, in which case I must apologise for my ignorance.)

it is supposed to be a relatively new settlement so it makes sense

I was thinking more about Mabe Village.

Yeah I remember when I played Hollow Knight a couple years ago, definitely didn't think it was one of the best games ever made or anything
