This will probably turn out really cool and I'm looking forward to it. Making the leap to a proper open world has been a long time coming. Though I did enjoy the modern 2D Pokemons (particularly Moon, Eevee, and Shield), I think the new look and a focus on exploration will go a long way to making the Pokemon games feel like an adventure again (in a way they haven't to me personally for a while).

I don't think it will be a full "Breath of the Wild" style reimagining though. It looks like a relatively normal Pokemon game in terms of capturing, training, and combat.

The snippets of battles we got in that trailer looked very dull, by keeping the camera on the player character (who basically does nothing during battles) it robs the scene of any kind of energy.

That trailer has strong concept demo vibes tbh. Not that far from a fan made thing made in Unreal that would have been the basis of a "leak" back in the day.

I'm not taking "Early 2022" too seriously based on how early the trailer looks. The core concept is something I've wanted for a long time though, so I'm hyped to see that they're developing it and I'm looking forward to seeing more when it's polished and ready.

I'm not familiar with Pokemon games. I'm sure I read Sword & Shield was a big generational leap from previous titles?

The main series started top-down tile based. It basically remained that way, even in transitioning to 3D visuals and with some slight experimentation in fixed perspective in certain areas. Sword and Shield were the games to finally swing the balance towards full 3D, mostly with fixed cameras still like early 3D JRPGs but also introducing the semi-open world Wild Area where the player has full camera control on the right stick. Most of the game's structure however remained classically pokemon (with the exception of the wild area) like battles remaining classic turn based encounters. Sword and Shield's DLC expanded on the wild area concept, and now this game looks to be the next evolution of that and a full transition to open-world full player controlled camera etc., but moreso in gameplay innovation too in how encounters appear to be fully integrated into the world.

Aha, I see. Thanks for explaining in depth. So Legends Arceus will be true open world. Besides a short time on an original game rom I've never played a Pokemon game so guess they're aimed at the younger market but I'm actually eager to play Sword soon.

[* I don't mean to lower the tone but whilst typing it out I thought Arceus sounds like arsey-us!]

It's a hard c!

It's obviously a bit hard to tell exactly what Legends Arceus will be yet, but that definitely seems to be the impression they are giving.

And yes they are definitely aimed at a younger audience, if anything that's got more pronounced as the series has gone on. If you do play Sword you really should go in expecting an easy game because of it!

I fully expect this game to run like total ass.

But I will probably buy it anyway.

Makes sense they're sticking to Sinnoh for this considering it has the most interesting lore with its history. I'm excited but really hope GF go all out with this. It's one thing to make an open world game it's another to simply just follow trends.

No point getting to know them if you don't...er, already know them.

Anyways, this is looking like a diamond in the rough at the moment and I'm cynical about that early 2022 release. But for now, let's just take in the fact we're alive to see this finally becoming a reality.

Not hugely thrilled by how far in the past the setting is, but other than that it all looks great!

This has a lot of potential. Clean up the graphics and fix the framerate issues, and it should look as grand as the adventure it's proposing.

Now, someone make an edit of the trailer using the brand new world song from the Sword/Shield E3 trailer. It deserves to be used here more than it did that one.
