Anyone else tried one of these? I tried my first one last night without knowing too much about them and got spanked at first gym.

Going to try again but with a bit more effort, preparation and research into what I'm up against.

So now;

Attempt 2.

I'm only following the core rules with one clause;

1) Can only catch the first pokemon in each area (buildings and towns with unique pokemon sets count as a new area eg Bellsprout Tower).
2) All caught Pokemon must be nicknamed.
3) Any fainted Pokemon must be released (I'm tempted to simply permabank them instead so I can see my fallen comrades at the end).
4) White out is a game over regardless of living Pokemon in the PC.

No Dupe clause - If the first encountered 'mon is one I've already caught, I can discard the encounter and keep trying until a new 'mon is found.

So far I've only picked up my starter which, as my Trainer ID ended with a 9, is Cyndaquil.

Wish me luck!

Not done a Nuzlocke challenge myself, but I have watched Kriken do a few. Most were races with another streamer. Was pretty interesting and something I do want to give a bash myself. Think I may do soon. Any particular reason you went with Soul Silver?

Necessity, really.

The only carts I had to hand that I’d want to try were Black and SoulSilver. I had all the Gen 7 and 8 and variant cards but didn’t want to try those, wanted a classic style grid mover. My Black card still had ‘mon I wanted to move off the cart to Home but there was nothing of note on the SS cart.

I also feel like I never gave gen 2 a proper chance, and I can’t really remember a lot about them despite having finished it twice. So I kinda thought I’d like to explore Johto a bit more.

I’m currently grinding before I hit the first gym. I caught a Geodude by chance which will serve me well against Faulkner, so I’m grinding him, but will get all my team over level 10 before I even try. Hoping to snag a bellsprout and a ghastly before I head beyond the first gym.

So far my team is;

Cyndaquil
Sentret (really wanted a Ratata but ah well)
Pidgey ( :datass: )
Geodude ( :cool: )

I do like Nuzlockes but I've never actually finished one. I end up being too lazy or too impatient and letting Pokemon die because I can't be bothered using a Potion and just assuming it could probably survive one more hit -- and then it doesn't.

What's to stop you from spam grinding and pokemon centering until your cyndaquil is level 100?

I guess nothing, but... that’s not the point? You could do that in the normal game and also not have any fun because you’re grinding a level 100 Cyndaquil against level 2 Pidgeys.

It’s about taking a game that’s famously pretty easy and making it more difficult and interesting with a few restrictions that make you approach something you can normally steamroll through with a bit more thought.

Ok, so I’m back to where I was when I first failed. I’m not sure what the general attitude towards levelling up is, but I didn’t even approach Bellsprout Tower before I knew I had a team that could handle it.

Having been a bit more cautious, I now have a pretty well rounded team who could comfortably blast the first gym, but I haven’t looked forward to what’s ahead.

I luckily caught a Gastly in my first encounter in the Tower, and also caught a Geodude en route, so I’ve got some relatively rare and useful types covered. As such, leaving Violet City my team is;

Buster (Cyndaquil)
Yurei (Gastly)
Enoki (Bellsprout)
Streetrat (Pidgey)
Breakout (Geodude)

And of course

Egg.

With Caverat (Zubat) and AxlRose (Wooper) in the PC.

Gonna make this work... :datass:

I might actually give a Nuzlocke a go when I’ve finished (well started and finished) grinding out some legendary Pokémon in the dynamax adventures in the Crown Tundra. It’d be on Sword though, I love the older games but unless they put older gens on the Switch so I can trade any excess legendary Pokémon to Home for future trading purposes.

Does the starter option still work with 1-3 as grass, 4-6 as fire, 7-9 as water and then 0 a free choice? Depending what your trainer number ends in. I’m not sure how it’d work in Sword though, do you class the whole of the wild area as one route? Or each area?

Is that the thing where if you fail you can restart from the last gym?

I ain't doing that, if I black out, I'm out.

Most people online weem to be treating each subsection of the wild area as a new area for the purposes of getting a new 'mon, which seems reasonable to me.

And yea, but the ruleset I checked had 7-9 being fire which was lucky as I really wanted a Cyndaquil.

Thats very good with each area of the wild area being classed separately so you can catch another Pokémon, was thinking you might be limited to the first one you ran into for the whole of the wild area!

So after saying I was gonna go into every fight much better prepared, I slightly underestimated the second gym. Not to a loss-inducing amount, but a surprise crit and being unexpectedly outsped by a lvl 17 Scyther cost me Buster, my starter Quilava, which hurt. Genuinely thought he would breeze the gym having one shotted every mon in the rest of the gym, but that crit strawberry floating stung. Breakout, my Geodude, stepped up and swept the team barely taking a hit. Should have led with him.

So I’ve replaced my fallen comrade with Togepi, only until I pick up something better.

2 badges down and the team is;

Breakout (Geodude)
Enoki (Bellsprout)
AxlRose (Wooper)
Yurei (Gastly)
Tamago (Togepi)
Caverat II (Zubat)

More. Precaution.

I've never finished a Pokemon game. But I have attempted a Pearl Nuzlocke which was the furthest I've got. Lost my chimchar early in a field battle (very sloppy!) and after 3 or 4 badges lost too many 'mon against a field giraffe pokemon I was trying to catch. At that point, loss the energy for it, even though I permaboxed so I could continue normal.

Bought shield at xmas, not got Pokeballs yet. GF is playing it mainly, so I might nuzlocke it as first playthrough, permabox and then play normal if I screw it up.

Why are you attempting these challenges if you've never beaten the game in regular?!

I'm allowing that in mine. There's a load of extra rules forbidding those, demanding it be played in Set mode etc, but this is my first serious attempt so I'm just playing the core rules.
