wow kinda looks like the overworld engine has been... dumbed down?

i really wanted them to go behind-the-player 3D look all-out because then it feels like a true 3d pokemon adventure.

game freak arent very good at this whole 3d overworld thing.

How has the 'overworld engine been dumbed down' if it's a massive leap forward from the original and on a par with XY from last year?

Dumbed down from what?

Overworld looks pretty good to me. Proof of the pudding is the eating etc.

Don't take it personally.

From the screenshots seen it seems like it's a downgrade from X/Y, thats not to say it will stay the same it might just be the bland screenshots they have chosen to show from OR/AS.

Obviousely X/Y isn't a tour-de-force and the camera angles change from overhead to behind-the-player but even the overhead shots in X/Y look more detailed and less 'blocky' (less like they are tiles) for lack of a better word.

I mean don't get me wrong I am gunna buy this game Day 1 most likely and love the gooseberry fool out of it, but I was hoping for a bit of an upgrade in the graphic engine for the overworld. Still looks like something that could probably be done on OG DS.

I'd be surprised if they don't wifi a Diancie given that it will now have a MegaEvo. Seems stupid to include one if most people don't have access to it.

I'll definitely pick up one of these any, probably Sapphire because I love Kyogre..

I'm still playing XY quite a bit. I've EV trained a Protean Greninja, Gale Wings Talonflame and in Aegislash. Just got to grind them up to lv100.

Thats only 2 areas in comparison. We haven't see anything exciting yet really.

The trailer of ORAS didn't seem any worse than X/Y to me, but it's also a possibility that any downgrade could be because X/Y wasn't, err, technically the best. :shifty: It couldn't support 3D in the overworld (or stable framerates in battle), so perhaps they're designing ORAS to perform better within their engine's limitations. Additionally, as the comparison screenshots seem to show, the 3D version is actually pretty faithful to the original map, so that would naturally lead to it being more blocky than a region designed from scratch for 3D.

Although considering this seems to be a pretty sizeable remake, it seems like the turnaround on it is pretty quick. It was clearly in development alongside X/Y, which doesn't really give them much time to do massive engine-based upgrades.

So a bunch of potential reasons why it might look worse, but I think it's really too early to tell if the game will look worse (I actually prefer the generally more colourful palette Hoenn appears to have, for one).

The above is all true.

Main thing is we've hardly seen any OR/AS shots/videos for comparison.

It doesn't need to be 1:1 though, and it wouldn't hurt to spruce things up a wee bit, HG/SS did a great job of that...

Mega Evolutions are different in that you can only do one per match whereas actual evolution is permanent so perhaps that's the reasoning behind some of the more curious choices..

I like the MegaEvo mechanic, most of the designs have been really good and in some cases have made a Pokémon that is crap competitively like Charizard, into something that's actually very good.

Secret bases have been confirmed to return, with street pass

Following on from the original games, Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire feature Secret Bases. However, these have been fully upgraded and integrated into the Nintendo 3DS hardware and software, and are now called Super-Secret Bases

To create a Secret Base, you need to have a Pokémon knowing the move, Secret Power, and take it to one of many places in the Hoenn region. These are all indicated by a small rectangular block on walls or trees. When used, the Secret Base is open and you can then go into it. We'll provide a list of locations upon launch of the game.

Secret bases werent in pearl ;)
They weren't a waste of time per se, it was just difficult to share bases with link cable and what not, so I found. Wifi and street pass sounds ideal for it.

strawberry floating called it!

Seriously I was all oh yeah Secret Bases with StreetPass and trainers to battle and you could make your own gym.

AND BOOM

Stole my idea.

Anyway secret bases were alot cooler in R/S then D/P tbh since it wasn't all underground.

D/P/PT weren't proper bases were they, just the weird underground thing that let you find fossils.

Well, I clocked in loads of hours in the underground since all my friends who lived with me had D/P and we spent a lot of the time underground.

You could run around, digging up fossils, items and gems (which you could grow Harvest Moon style and in turn sell for traps). The traps you could place down and when stood upon would spring them.

You could build in the walls a Secret Base but you would have to unlock the ability to remove rocks and things to clear your secret base and add loads of things to it like TV's, beds, sofas, toys, posters, etc. Feature wise it was alot better than R/S as there was a capture the flag minigame (that did nothing really) and thats about it.

Like I said though its all underground so it didn't look as nice compared to if you had a secret base in a tree.
