OrangeRKN wrote:Like I posted before, not only does it being on rails make thematic sense in evoking being on safari, it means events throughout the level can be really tightly choreographed, and densely packed levels that are repeatable and designed around the player's route like an interactive theme park ride. I'm sure you could make a snap like game that was free roam like a Hitman level or Majora's Mask but being on rails can make the design so much constrained and directed. The original game was like that and I want a sequel to build on the same principles.

The photography game Umurangi Generation basically does exactly that, but I agree the on rails nature is more thematic for a wildlife game.

Looking forward to playing my first Pokemon game since, I think, Sapphire. :toot:

I'm interested to see if my kids ask about this, they've been getting into Pokémon stuff more and more over the last year or so. They might not "get" the type of game that this is going to be however.

Not heard of this before but it looks great! Big Jet Set Radio vibes (especially as I just read the DLC literally adds roller skates and a spray can  )

What even is Pokémon Snap? It just looks like the intro to Dead Rising but instead of photographing zombies, you're photographing Pokémon. Have I got it wrong because that sounds crap? :?

It's an on-rails shooter but instead of killing enemies you are scoring points by taking well-framed photos of them. There are various items you can use to interact with the world to hit triggers to cause certain events to happen, leading to higher scoring photo opportunities.

In the original for example there is a Charmeleon that you can throw an apple at to knock him into some lava, making him evolve into Charizard. Then you can throw a pester ball at the Charizard to make him face you and use flamethrower, which you can take a picture of for many points.

Hmm, thanks for that. Hopefully there's a demo as I'd love to try it.. Just not sure if I'd really enjoy it though.

I bounced off it quite quickly actually! Although I am interested in the DLC so might give it another shot, and it’s definitely developed a bit of a following online.

Hopefully there will be, it feels like the kind of game that would benefit. We had a demo for Mystery Dungeon so why not this?

As for whether you'd enjoy it, I'd suggest it will (if it is like the original) appeal to people who:

- Are fans of on-rails shooters
- Like high score chasing gameplay
- Are pokemon fans who want to experience pokemon behaviour "in the wild"

The last point was always the big one for me with the original. Pokemon in 3D was a big deal then so that played a part too, but I always felt Snap portrayed pokemon as wild creatures in a way the core games never did because of the way in the core series they are gamified. While the anime shares a plot with the core games (catching, training, battling, becoming champion) the way pokemon are shown in the anime I think has only been suitably captured by Pokemon Snap and Detective Pikachu (the 3DS game) - living creatures part of a wider ecosystem (Detective Pikachu is less pokemon in the wild and more pokemon as part of human civilisation, but that's cool too!). In the core games you only really get a sense of pokemon as wild creatures from the pokedex entries, whereas in Snap it's their primary portrayal. Sun and Moon had a few snap-like mini-games(?) that captured the same thing a little but they were obviously very minor.

I hope that makes some kind of sense as to why it has a big appeal to me

Just to add to ORKN's explanation, I think this is a good video for understanding Snap. It's a tutorial for how to get good photos on the first level.

The gameplay loop is basically following the course and experimenting with how you interact with Pokemon. There's a little execution (throwing bait to the right place, getting the Pokemon in-frame, timing the shot) but it's mostly puzzle-solving to do with getting the Pokemon to interact with you or various props in the level.

It's a kind of cute, relaxing game about searching for secrets in the levels. The Pokemon all do various really cute and funny things as you try to interact with them in different ways, so it's a lot of fun to play around with to try to get high-scoring photos. I really enjoyed it.

Far better than any Pokemon game I've played (I do like some of them but have no nostalgic attachment to the series).

Gotta be honest I'm not a fan of the title just being called "New" Pokemon Snap. I know I'm being nitpicky tho lol. But I feel like it deserves a better name.

So this is £49.99 on the eShop... I supposed we shouldn't be surprised, but given the original game is about 45 minutes long, that'd be a lot of money to pay if it is anywhere close to the same length... At that price I'd hope this was at least 8 hours long, but that doesn't seem realistic.
