Yeah I was a bit miffed by the new at first, but I realised what largely bothers me is the lack of the National Dex again. I'd prefer to keep all my Pokémon storages on a game cartridge than in the cloud and, like Skarjo says, Bank is great for storage and organisation, but not great visually. It's a faff to have to keep going back to it when playing US/UM and figuring out what I need for my ongoing Living Dex too.

But I don't mind if Sword and Shield featured "only" 400-500 Pokémon. I think the fanbase on Reddit and the like have gotten *very* entitled.

Game Freak aren't deleting your collecting or removing Pokémon from existing, they are just saying certain ones won't be usable in Sword/Sword.

It doesn't really ruin the "Gotta Catch 'em All" tag either, as I don't there there has been any generation sinc ethe GBC where you catch them all with just one game (and the other version's exclusives trade over). This started with the GBA's Ruby and Sapphire in 2003 (which did ditch all your previous 'mon permanently) and required you to own Colosseum and XD to catch them all, which was on an entirely different console altogether and those two games didn't come out until 2004 and 2005.

I'm fine with each generation know including a decent selection of new monsters and a revolving (not literally) selection of old monsters. It'll possibly breathe life into ones that were constantly overlooked or had blatabtly superior (or should that be "SERPERIOR") competitors.

I like having my old monsters in storage (I have my team from 2003 there) but I don't ever use them anymore. I try and pick a team of entirely new Pokémon each generation. And even if we get past endgame and beyond, I try and build something new. Just porting over the same Pokémon from years back and constantly using the same few sort of defeats the purpose of a brand new adventure. You're still catching and amassing a collection, and hour old collection is being untouched. I'd imagine they'll have different old Pokémon in each new gen, just like they have older monsters in the Alola and Kalos Dex.

I'm fine with that.

Do you think there's any chance that they might drip feed new (old) Pokemon into the game, via community events and such post-launch? I can't see them getting DLC, but if every few weeks/months they announce a new event that will roll out a new set of Pokemon (possibly into the Wild Area, maybe relating to the season?), that could gradually fill out the Pokedex. At least I'd like to see something like that.

Yea, exactly as Parksey says. In fact, I’d be quite happy to have older mon not usable in each new gen forcing you to build a team suited to each game so long as there’s *something* where your whole collection can be meaningfully interacted with. I liked in, I think B/W, where there were no old pokemon until the post game. It gave the region a tremendous feeling of individuality. But there’s still a need for somewhere where your whole collection means something.

I was thinking something like the dream suite, except it's on Home, and with a better range of stuff to do. They could do anything with Home really, but the one thing I doubt they ever will do is put a battle system to it. If they did do that, it'd have to be with no way to make changes to the 'mon stored within.

Yeah I forgot to mention that in my post, but I loved Black and White for that. 150 entirely new designs with some unique typings in there (as well as some callbacks to the first 150) and no old monsters to be found. No more Zubats or Caterpies for the first five hours. It actually added to the sense of discovery and I wish I'd gone in blind.

I'd much rather they did that than just created half the number of new monsters (I think X and Y only had about 60 new ones) and filled the other 300 slots with ones we have caught before. I'd quite like them to make an entirely stand alone generation, with no old ones whatsoever, even post-game. They can still be linked via Home/Bank, but make you use these new ones.

Of course, when I was reading on Reddit, Black and White were singled out for criticism as the one other time "Gamefreak nearly destroyed the franchise" because they had the nerve to create this new Pokédex and wanted people to use them.

Of course I'm betting after the Elite Four everyone transferred their Blastoise or Charizard over and the frightful nightmare of having to use the Gen 5 monsters were over.

Actually I did go in blind for Sun and Moon and it was exciting to go into a battle or patch of wild grass and wonder what I would find. And then be eternally disappointed when it was a Ledyba or something.

Most hardcore fans have probably used the same monsters for upwards of ten years now. They can go one generation without them. And it's not even all of them either. If one of your team doesn't make it, learn the new game's balance and meta, discover a good replacement and make a new team.

Yep, the more I think about it - and the more I read the incessant, entitled whining and plans of a boycott over on the Pokémon Reddit, the more okay with it all I become.

It's all down to time and resources. They are pumping these games out every year. I honestly think GF needs to be a bit more open with their IP like GO and let other folks try making spin-offs or remakes. Give themselves more time between games.

I’d be completely fine with being locked to purely a new selection of Pokémon in each generation, it was great in Black and White not being able to go back to your old faithful Pokémon to get you through.

Also as I’ve mentioned before, we have no idea how many Pokémon have been cut from the Galar dex do we? For all we know we might still be well into 600 region of catchable Pokémon which would be far more than enough to make a very competitive team for online if thats what people are worried about.

I hope they use this as an opportunity to have a clear out. A declutter, if you will. I've not played Gen 5 onwards but even from the first four generations, I can easily think of some 'mon that could be forgotten completely going forward and no one would really mind.

The below are all either basically clones of other, better Pokemon, or just rubbish designs, and I hope they're the ones to be removed from the game as a result of this decision:

Mr Mime
Jynx
Qwilfish
Smoochum
Poochyena
Mightyena
Zigzagoon
Linoone
Wurmple + evolutions
Taillow
Swellow
Skitty
Delcatty
Aron
Lairon
Aggron
Volbeat
Illumise
Gulpin
Swalot
Torkoal
Barboach
Whiscash
Corphish
Crawdaunt
Luvdisc
Starly + evolutions
Kricketot
Kricketune
Burmy
Wormadam
Mothim
Shellos
Gastrodon
Glameow
Purugly
Mime Jr
Finneon

There, that's nearly 50 out of the first 450 or so. You're welcome Game Freak.

How disappointed would you be if you entered long grass in a new area of the upcoming games and encountered any of that lot?

LEAVE MY LINOONE ALONE YOU MONSTER

And I suppose that’s the trouble with trying to declutter: popularity is relative. Torkoal is a cool tortoise with the broken Drought ability; Staraptor can learn Close Combat making it the most fun bird; and Swellow is good for Phoenix Wright memes.

I am however playing devil’s advocate a bit here, because I wouldn’t really mind any of them going. Also where the heck is Sunflora in the list of bobbins Pokémon to drop?

The Starly line is my joint favourite early game bird, tied with Hoothoot/Noctowl as I just love the shiny variation of Noctowl.

That is the problem with cutting Pokémon out though, I dare say every Pokémon is someone’s favourite.
