To be fair, the leak came out around this time yesterday, so well into the evening in Japan, and the video will have been completely finished by then, presumably. The Direct was to serve simply as an announcement, as the clock struck on the series' 20th anniversary, that new games were coming this year.

While it's a bit annoying that the Direct didn't show more - I think for X/Y's unveiling we got the starters, right? - as gamers we tend to get a bit ahead of ourselves anyway and expect more. This was just an unveiling, albeit one that was neutered by leaks 24 hours beforehand.

There still should have been more, dropping the names wasnt worthy of a direct, they could have done that in a tweet. If theres no footage or anything to show then dont hype up a direct, just get the names out there and be done with it.

Did they hype up the Direct though? I mean, they even announced that it was only going to be 5 minutes in length. I don't think they ever suggested anything more than a bit of anniversary news.

It was more a Direct about the passing of the anniversary with the "surprise" being that new games were coming before the year was out. The 5 minute video would have worked a lot better than just a tweet, but the leak and our expectations seem to have tainted.

Really, the five minute, brief, video served its purpose. More info will come out sooner rather than later. It's a teaser.

Most Pokemon info isn't divulged like this anyway. Doesn't it normally come out gradually in issues of Coro Coro?

EDIT - The weird bit was that the made a point of mentioning the languages (this is a company that region locked the 3DS after the region-free original DS). Still, at least it means I can buy a copy over here and not have to put up with all those horrible, false monster names. strawberry float you, Lizardon.

Very pleasantly surprised Pokemon Bank will work with the VC games. I played through Leaf Green last year with the view to be able to transfer everything up into the newer games and the bank. Wish I'd just waited for these now. Maybe I'll go through red or yellow.

I was having second thoughts about picking up Yellow tomorrow but the Bank news has convinced me to get it

Yeah I wasn't going to bother, but now I might give one of them a go. I'm surprised they've done this, as Gen 1 is pretty difference under the hood compared to the newer games. It wouldn't just be a case of sending that little clump of 8-bit data from the GB game to the bank.

Tempted to go for Yellow or Green (is Green only available in Japan or is it on the UK store too?) as I haven't played those before. At least I know now that any hours poured in are not a massive waste of time. Well, I'm a 20-something man playing Pokemon so I guess it's all relative.

Hopefully this means that any future Pokemon games can all be future-proofed. The move from Gen 2 to Gen 3 was pretty annoying, but they've done an okay job since then of making sure fans who follow the series through the years can transfer their monsters. Pretty sure I have ones from my original Sapphire play-through on my X cart.

There's no reason why they can't stick all the previous games on the store. I'm presuming G/S will come eventually, though why GBA games only seem to come out on the Wii U VC I'll never know...

Oh, man, I can't wait to use the new NINE LANGUAGES functionality! I can't believe that they focussed on that as an announcement feature  .

The opening sequence was cool, though, and I did enjoy the montage of historic start-up screens - that was pretty neat, even for someone like me who has very little knowledge of Pokemon. But overall it seemed a bit odd to show absolutely nothing of the new titles and it is a little frustrating that the launch is probably at least eight months away.

They're not the first company to only announce a game with a few off-screen bits of concept art. This wouldn't been a problem if it hadn't leaked yesterday and Nintendo aren't the type to rush together something in less than a day to compensate

Lugia  Togepi :dread:

Lucario and Greninja (that scarf/tongue) :dread: How are they so popular? Shouldn't be anywhere near that list or Smash Bros.

Skippy, can you quote this? I'll read these later (and then invariably post three massive rants about how I disagree  ) so would appreciate a notification as a reminder. Cheers :toot:

I guess I'm getting Pokemon Yellow then. Really surprised they are making these VC titles have Pokemon Bank connectivity. Awesome stuff.

Okay, so I know very little about Pokemon games... but I see that the older games are releasing for 3DS tomorrow.

What do you reckon? Thanks in advance :toot: .

Ditto makes sense lore wise though.

They're failed Mewto experiments.

@Jawa: Yellow was released after Red/Blue. It's a slight upgrade but not by much. It arguably has a harder start of game because you can't choose Bulbasaur, the canonical choice of starter for noobs who are bad at games (no offence ;) ). OTOH had a few extra mini-games IIRC, and having Pikachu follow you around is cute.

Get X, Y, Omega Red or Alpha Sapphire. Tomorrow's releases are very much for nostalgic reasons and could get pretty annoying for newcomers. They were great in the 90s but there are much better options today.
