I don't know because as you said that wasn't the point I was making.

The point I was making is that Blair isn't being the appeal to the racists guy in my opinion.

Most of the issue won't lie with those coming but with people here expecting them to learn English fluently within minutes and stuff, which is where government should have set expectations and such.

For the immigrants themselves, funding language courses and things can only help with getting people feel more at home and settled and reducing the risk of people grouping in their own groups away from everyone else.

As I say I don't know the extent of issues and stuff, my point is I don't think he is pandering to racists etc.

You're saying immigrants don't integrate into British society. I think that needs clarifying a bit (a lot).

What parts of British society/culture are immigrants not integrating into? Which immigrants are these? Why is it their fault the far-right hates them?

In this report, we make it clear that there is a duty to integrate, to accept the rules, laws and norms of our society that all British people hold in common and share, while at the same time preserving the right to practise diversity, which is fully consistent with such a duty.

“Without the right to, for example, practise one’s faith, diversity would have no content; but without the duty to integrate, ‘culture’ or ‘faith’ can be used as a way of upsetting that basic social contract that binds us together.

All of that is Blair saying “Hey Mr Racist dude, we hear you! Some bloody immigrants upset our social contract! Some of the bastards ignore our laws! Bastards! But hey, how about we let them cook us some tasty spicy food, while we force them to speak English while on the train?”

No, I'm not.

I'm saying some feel they do, and that is because government failed to set out what multiculturalism and integration entails and so people came up with their own description.

I'm saying that I read that article as both sides have issues, and that government is mostly at fault because they havent set out what people should expect of those coming, and they haven't made enough resources available to those coming to make their settling in easier and smoother.

I'm not going to comment any more because I'm not able to articulate what I mean, or your ignoring what I mean to focus on an individual line that wasn't the actual point I was making.

Absolute rubbish, I dislike Diane Abbott because she's a liability who shouldn't be allowed anywhere near high office, race/gender has nothing to do with it.

What failings does Abbott have that makes her more of a liability than other politicians?

And also, just as relevant: what aspects of her being make being her a 'punishment'?

There are so many more politicians who deserve more scrutiny than her, but despite that I think most of us would fail pretty hard in our day to day lives if we were subject to as much abuse as she gets (she gets something like 50% of all hate correspondence in Parliament directed at just her - that surely takes someone with great strength to endure?).

Diane Abbott is a perfectly decent Labour MP as far as I know? She opposed austerity IIRC so points for that. She's not great in interviews, but the judgement for that has been disproportionate. She wouldn't have this very negative reputation if she were white or a man.

I always notice other people's newspaper purchases when out and about. It's depressing how 95% of the time it'll be either the Daily Mail or the Sun. It's always ugly white people clutching them, with a suspicious look in their eyes.
