Yeah but silver lining, just think the gooseberry fool the Tories would be getting away with if they were good against this gooseberry fool heap labour opposition.

Don't worry though, Labour understand the mood of the nation and now understand what it'll take to win the next election. That's why they've readmitted Derek Hatton to the party. :fp:

A new centrist party opposed to Brexit?

https://tribunemag.co.uk/2019/02/yester ... Elh84S8zoo

It begs the question: how committed is Umunna to Europeanism in the first place? After all, he was quite prepared to ditch EU fundamentals like free movement after the Brexit vote. Before the 2015 general election, Umunna was writing favourably about Blue Labour, a socially conservative, pro-Brexit faction of the party. Umunna also employed Jonathan Rutherford, one of the faction’s gurus, as a speechwriter.

Are they sure?

An LBC presenter was attacked in London yesterday, though you’ll probably recognise him more from Question Time and other political programmes:

LBC radio presenter Maajid Nawaz was attacked last night, with police investigating following reports of a racially aggravated assault.

Nawaz said he does not wish to “harbour hate” for his attacker, who allegedly racially abused him, as he criticised “far-left” and “far-right” figures on social media for politicising his attack.

The LBC presenter was hit from behind outside the Soho Theatre in central London on Monday night by a white male, he said, posting a photo of the cut to his forehead, caused by a punch to the face with what could have been “a signet ring”.

He said his forehead could be scarred for life and that he expected his attacker to be found, and face “British justice”. Nawaz said there were witnesses who heard the racial abuse and they gave statements to the police who “have his face on CCTV”.

The attacker, whom Nawaz called “a racist coward” ran away without attempting to rob him.

The founder of the Quilliam Foundation, an anti-radicalisation organisation, criticised “far-left” social media users for politicising his attack by highlighting his centrist views, which they apparently claimed “legitimise rightwing hate”.

He also criticised “far-right” figures for “callously casting doubt on the fact that this racist attack even happened”.

Later, on Facebook, he thanked witnesses, nurses and members of the emergency services for treating him with diligence and care: “I just returned home from the hospital after having my wound glued up. I owe a huge debt to the two lovely young witnesses (both white non-Muslims) male and female who called the police, and waited with me to console me, and then provided a witness statement (I won’t identify them as I don’t wish to endanger them).”

“Your kindness kept me sane. I also thank Soho Theatre for identifying the racist assailant on their CCTV footage. I thank the police first responders (all of whom were white non-Muslims) for their professionalism (even though after the kind policeman asked my profession, he did ask “what’s LBC?).

“People from all ethnicities and all faiths and none helped me yesterday. It’s in that spirit that I wish to carry on my work. I do not wish to harbour hate for my attacker. I’ve already been down that path at a younger age and I have seen how it leads to nothing good.”

The Metropolitan police said they were called to a report of a racially aggravated assault in Dean Street at 7.10pm.

A Met police spokesperson said: “Officers attended the location. The suspect had made off prior to the arrival of police. An investigation has been launched. There has been no arrest at this stage.”

So an Independent Liberal Democrat Alliance might get us all back to a 2010 General Election result, which I guess is a lot of centrists' version of "everything was better in the 1950s".

Well it was better but not a lot better.

did anyone see that the Isis girl (15 when she left the country remember) has had her citizenship of the UK (where she was born) revoked by the Home Office, so she is now in effect stateless.

She had dual British and Bangladeshi citizenship. So she is now only a Bangladeshi citizen. Under international law you cannot take away citizenship if they only have one. Her Bangladeshi citizenship hasn’t been widely reported for some reason.

Edit. It appears she is eligible for Bangladeshi citizenship but does not currently hold a passport.

There seem to be conflicting reports about her Bangladeshi Citizenship.

Some places are saying she was born there and moved to the UK at age 7, other places are saying she was born in the UK and is just eligible for Bangladeshi citizenship via one of her parents.

It's strawberry floated up either way. It supports the view that UK born children of first generation immigrants will always be second class citizens, never fully British, and can be sent "back" to a country they have no genuine connection with. It seems unlikely she even knew she was technically a citizen of Bangladesh. Literally, if she was British born to British parents with no possibility of having documented dual nationalities this couldn't happen but because she's a minority and it plays well in the press for Sajid Javid's desire to become Tory leader it's been revoked.

She has done something terrible and should be tried for whatever crimes she has committed in the countries she has committed them in, where that justice system can be deemed safe. Her British citizenship shouldn't be revoked and this absolutely stinks.

Another Labour MP has quit tonight, claiming the party is racist:

Joan Ryan has become the eighth Labour MP to resign and join the breakaway Independent Group, claiming Jeremy Corbyn’s party has become, “infected with the scourge of anti-Jewish racism”.

Ryan, the MP for Enfield North, said she had been a member for four decades – but could no longer remain as a Labour MP.

Echoing Luciana Berger, the Jewish MP for Liverpool Wavertree, Ryan blamed what she claimed was the Labour leadership’s “dereliction of duty” in the face of the “evil” of antisemitism, for her decision to resign.

In a stinging resignation letter, she said: “I cannot remain a member of the Labour party while this requires me to suggest that I believe Jeremy Corbyn – a man who has presided over the culture of anti-Jewish racism and hatred of Israel that now afflicts my former party – is fit to be prime minister of this country. He is not.”

I wonder if they'll all come running back if Corbyn were to leave (Well, let's face it, die of old age) before they're next up for re-election in their constituencies.

Is her newborn baby not British? Are they revoking the baby's citizenship as well? Do correct me if I've got the wrong end of the stick (I hope I have!) but isn't that literally condemning an infant to the shittiest possible life because of something their parents did? :dread:
