If it does then it’s not too bad. I was trying to google it but struggled. I read though that the small fine increases each time you don’t vote.

Unless they have recently changed it, then that’s not true as quite high numbers spoil their ballots.

And there has been an increase in recent years of what Australians call informal or spoilt ballots - instances where voters either mistakenly or intentionally submit a ballot that is blank or improperly filled in, which cannot be counted in the final tally.

Spoilt ballots count for around 6% of the total votes cast in the 2010 election. Taken together with the number of eligible voters who fail to register, the actual percentage for voter turnout in Australia's federal elections hovers in the low 80s.

Even with a “none of the above” option I’d still think it was wrong to force people to vote.

Looks like I won't be able to vote.

Noice.

I only got mine yesterday, had to rush to the post office this morning to send it first class in the hope it gets back in time. Should have been sent out well before now, effectively trying to disenfranchise those living abroad

Re: Australia, it's not the compulsory bit that gets prior out there to vote; it's the democracy sausages!

You get more barbeques at polling stations in the UK, you'll get higher turnout.

Also, Australia always hold elections in a Saturday, which isn't a bad idea.

I called off his players' names as they came marching up the steps behind him....All nice guys. They'll finish last. Nice guys. Finish last.

Thursdays are fine, but it should be a day off for all non-essential workers. That goes for local and EU elections too.

Its extremely amusing, I have to admit, to see these guys getting milkshaked! Only problem is, I can see this starting a trend. How long before some idiot decides to milkshake someone like Anna Soubry.

I don't necessarily like her, but I wouldn't want anyone to throw a milkshake at her. And right wingers on twitter are already suggesting it. :dread:

I’m sure she’ll survive a bit of milkshake.

And I’d imagine right wingers on Twitter are threatening far worse than a bit of milkshake. I worry far more about right wingers with knives, guns, vans and bombs than I do right wingers with dairy products.

According to my missus they’re called democracy sausages, and are the sole reason why Australia gets such high political turnout, not the tiny fine.
