That story about the elderly Iranian couple facing deportation. Those are actually the grandparents of a friend of mine. It's been a terribly stressful time for the family as you can imagine, and they're fighting it with everything they have. It's a small thing, but they do have a petition up on Change.org that's been doing really well (cleared over 100,000 signatures in less than a week), I'm going to post it here in case anyone wants to also sign it.

Countdown star Rachel Riley has said she is to be given extra security on the programme after receiving abuse online over her comments about anti-Semitism.

The TV star and maths expert said she has been targeted by Labour supporters on Twitter for her criticisms of the party and leader Jeremy Corbyn amid the ongoing row.

Riley, who is Jewish, has already spoken about being trolled online, but said the problem has worsened and includes physical threats.

She told the Times newspaper: "The more I speak, the more abuse I get, and the more abuse I get, the more I speak.

"It's got to the point where I can't look at my Twitter feed any more ... it's just a constant stream."

She added: "We are getting more security for Countdown."

Riley, who has appeared on the Channel 4 daytime programme since 2009, said she believes she is a "target" for speaking up against anti-Semitism, and that she does not "take it lightly".

She said: "With the hashtag Get The Tories Out or the red rose or hashtag JC4PM, they say to me 'You're only calling out the left'.

"Well, I've been attacked by people on the left and the best way to not have me talk about anti-Semitism on the left is not to be anti-Semitic."

Riley has previously stated that she has no political allegiance, and is not a Conservative, although she claims she has been labelled a Tory by supporters of Mr Corbyn.

However, she told the newspaper that she would not vote for Labour now, as she believes the party is "actively encouraging the abuse of people who are standing up to this".

Ms Riley said she had no doubt Mr Corbyn was anti-Semitic. She added: ‘It’s part of his fundamental core belief system, the overlooking of anti-Semitism in relation to his pro-Palestinian stance.’

Earlier this week, Riley recalled the "hideous" feeling of receiving hate-filled abuse for speaking out about anti-Semitism at the Holocaust Memorial Day reception at the House of Commons.

Mr Corbyn has strongly denied allegations of anti-Semitism during the controversy that has ripped through his party

I just saw this, this morning.

More than 2.6 million British people think the Holocaust is a myth, a poll has found.

Five per cent of UK adults do not believe millions of Jews were systematically murdered by the Nazis, according to the survey, which survivors and anti-racism campaigners said pointed to a “terribly worrying” level of denial.

A further 8 per cent of the British public claims the scale of the genocide has been exaggerated, according to research released to coincide with Holocaust Memorial Day.

“Such widespread ignorance and even denial is shocking,” said Olivia Marks-Woldman, chief executive of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust (HMDT), which commissioned the poll.

I just don't understand how anyone can deny the holocaust.
We're not talking about something from centuries ago where records weren't kept or have been lost and verbal history has become distorted so historians are filling in gaps with essentially a best guess, we're talking about something that happened in living memory. Something the Nazi's not only made no effort to keep secret but were proudly boasting about. We have survivors who lived through it, soldiers who went to those places and saw first-hand what was happening.

Thinking back to when I was at school, the holocaust wasn't particularly taught very well. I'm sure we went over numbers, but the vast majority of what I learned I took upon myself to research. They could definitely do with making yearly trips to the holocaust exhibitions at any of the war museums in London. To me, that was always the most effective learning experience. It's still sobering to visit them as an adult having the knowledge I have now.

I’m actually surprised the number of deniers is that low. I thought there were far more idiots around than that.

I'd love to see this broken down by political affiliation and geographic area. I bet it's actually a fair bit more than 1 in 8 in strong Leave areas.

This isn't just a British problem, it's been a gradual growing trend these past few years worldwide, though Germany, France and the USA have stood out because we're more familiar with the reporting from those countries. Seems to have krept up almost out of nowhere. It's not like there's widespread anti Jewish sentiment on TV or in the mainstream media.

They had an awareness thing on in my home village, would have been last year or so. There was a play on the Nuremberg Trials. It was really grim.

It's amazing that people have convinced themselves that it didn't happen, or attempted to reduce the impact. I don't understand anti Jewish sentiment at all.

I also didn't know Riley was Jewish until she did that interview.

It's utterly astonishing. Flights to Krakow are about 30 quid return from the UK for strawberry floats sake, you could visit Auschwitz in a day and see the horror firsthand.
