If he had been ignored a decade ago, the parents of the murdered children at Sandy Hook might not get the vile abuse they regularly receive. Millions more kids might have been immunised. People might not have been radicalised to the extent that Trump looked like a good guy to make President.

Is Moggy a crisis actor? I'm not saying he is, but they should definitely be looking at him.

Alex Jones was responsible for the vile abuse that Sandy Hook parents received. He was responsible for spreading antivax bullshit. He was responsible for persuading large numbers of people to support Trump. Sure those people are idiots, but they are idiots that were brainwashed by Jones.

I said millions of kids MIGHT have been immunised. Sorry that was hyperbole, but it’s undeniable that there are children out there who have not been immunised thanks to the likes of Jones.

Roughly 20,000,000 kindergarten children (taken as children aged 0-4 on 2010 census, assuming that's roughly the same rate now). CDC estimated (from this CNN article from 2015) 5% of kindergarten children weren't vaccinated against preventable diseases.

That is an estimated one million children.

Not the sole cause, no, obviously. He’s certainly a contributing factor regardless though, and points to the real harm the far-right does when handed the legitimacy of media appearances and neutral debate by a well meaning but ultimately naive centre. A centre that wants to "hear both sides" and tackle the violent and hateful rhetoric of fascism head on with debate will not win because they’ve already ceded the ground of what should be considered reasonable to the right by doing so.

That harm is I feel the thing that is overlooked the most when giving the far-right a platform to air their views. Allowing targeted abuse against minority groups or the less powerful is saying the hurt those groups have to endure from that rhetoric (and further, the potential violence they have to face because of that rhetoric being legitimised) is an acceptable cost for a peaceful society that can only be fully experienced by those not targeted by that same rhetoric.

All forms of broadcast and print media that neutrally deliver an opinion that might be delivered by the pub racist on a Thursday night grant that view some form of legitimacy it otherwise wouldn't have. It’s why actions like boycotting companies who advertise on channels and newspapers that broadcast hate is absolutely the right (and effective!) thing to do.

If opening up room to debate hatred head on is the best way to stop it then we’ve been doing a strawberry floating terrible job of it for quite a long time.

We tend to discuss the newspapers in here, but The Rock has accused the Daily Star (now owned by The Mirror, along with the Express) of fabricating an entire interview with him, which by ‘fake news’ standards would be quite something. They stuck it on their front page yesterday and various outlets around the world ran with it as well, likely because the paper is now under reputable ownership, so either The Rock is lying because there was some criticism on social media or the Daily Star will be issuing a clarification at the bottom of page 25...‘On Friday 11th January 2019 we appear to have imagined that we had an interview with Dwayne Johnson. We do apologise...’

I find it hard to believe that The Star make anything up.

You can’t be faking interviews though, that’s a whole new level. The Star is still supposed to resemble a serious newspaper (unlike the Sport) otherwise there would be no justification to run the paper as part of the press previews/reviews on TV and online.

You’d think they’d have the audio recordings to justify it themselves.

It’s all logical steps, you get away with making up facts and misrepresenting stuff for years you end up using it a bit and seeing you can pass that off too.
