  1. The leadership should continue to push the far left back to the margins. The country must know there is no question of negotiating the terms of power with them.
  2. The party needs a new future-oriented policy agenda based on an understanding of how the world is changing which rejects both the old-fashioned statist view of the left and the status quo politics of the right. I have suggested before that the technology revolution should be at the heart of it.
  3. We should openly embrace liberal, tolerant but common-sense positions on the “culture” issues, and emphatically reject the “wokeism” of a small though vocal minority.
  4. And we should go out and seek the best and brightest from the younger generation to come and stand as Labour candidates. And make a virtue of doing so.

What's wokeism?

Political correctness gone mad.

The single axis left-right divide of politics has always been an inadequate simplification, and references to it like to the "far left" are attempts at making certain political viewpoints seem more extreme than your own in some deceptively objective manner - the "far left" he is referring to are proponents of policies that poll very well with the population but are propagandised against like nationalisation of essential utilities.

He sums up the politics of the right as status quo politics - I suppose like leaving the European Union? The status quo the capitalist elite want to maintain isn't cultural or ecological but of wealth and power, and that's different to the ideological far right (to use the single axis) who are a tad more genocidal - again still not exactly maintaining of a status quo. If Conservatives were small-c conservatives they would be greener for one thing. The primary status quo they want to maintain isn't the environment but their capital.

The phrase "tolerant but common-sense" is code for "tolerant but not too tolerant!" - toleration without equality. That's backed up by complaining about "wokeism" as the new "political correctness gone mad!", which was mostly always a dog whistle for "this equality lark is starting to effect me now!".

What I'm trying to say is, Tony Blair is still a ghoul who actively wants to preserve a two party undemocratic state.

This isn't Question Time, you & other posters don't provide "evidence" for every opinion you hold. Trying to "gotcha" other forum posters with opposing views is not necessary.

do you understand the concept of a debate

A debate is when I can say things and people nod along nicely, if people disagree then that's cancel culture

people disagreeing with me is political correctness gone mad, whatever happened to freedom of speech eh??????????

The new Dr Who is quite fit, this calls for CRIME.

It such terrible timing too as (current Doctor Who series spoilers!) the Doctor is currently a statue and we all know we can't criticise statues.

The problem I find with anything that comes from Tony Blair, or that particular wing of the party, is that any good points can be quickly lost or ignored because, well it's Tony Blair. Talking about 1983 as if the world hasn't changed is good as is completely ignoring the influence of the media. Also never discussing the legacy of New Labour and how it is in part responsible for some of the issues we face today.

I'm going to read it is more depth later as there's a lot to take in but strawberry float, some of those polls/quotes. I'm looking at my latest local Labour leaflet and I'm fairly certain that for most people the issues it raises are pretty low on their list of priorities. And mentioning cyclists? In an area where the average age is probably pushing 50? Where traffic is crap already? I can't imagine it is a massive vote winner but the members like cycling so hey ho. But all that aside, even if people could keep their mouth shut on certain issues, and the leaflet focussed on reducing crime, not building on the green belt, reducing litter, increasing access to local healthcare, how can you counteract what can be described in some cases as stupidity?

Not to nit pick but I'm not sure anyone sees Matthew Parris as the nice face of the Tories. Or of anything.

The UK processing asylum claims on the other side of the Channel is obviously the best solution.

But it's much easier for the Tories to let people drown, rather than risk the "soft on immigration!" headlines.
