I heard an idea yesterday that Twitter should give users more control, for example verified accounts can be set to only accept tweets or replies from other verified accounts. That seems like a fair change to me. They can allow their tweets to be viewed by everyone, but can set it so that only verified people can interact.

Twitter could then have an optional ID system where anyone can be verified (not just a VIP verification that they seem to have now).

Anonymous users will still be able to interact with people who choose to allow it.

I'm not sure why the social media debate is so prominent though, this particular murder doesn't seem to be connected to online abuse as far as we know.

Does Grcade count as social media? Does that mean my real identity as David Beckham will be revealed?

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced the Queen has agreed Southend will be granted city status following the killing of MP Sir David Amess.

Sir David was stabbed to death at Belfairs Methodist Church on Friday.

He regularly championed Southend's case to be a city during his time in Parliament.

Mr Johnson told the House of Commons he was "happy" to announce Southend "will be accorded the city status it so clearly deserves".

The prime minister said: "That Sir David spent almost 40 years in this House, but not one day in ministerial office, tells everything about where his priorities lay

Seems an odd way to be awarded city status. My friend really wanted it to happen so it's fine.

Does having city status mean anything tangible?

You have to change your road signs. I think cities are able to receive further central grants over those with town status. Mostly though it's about prestige.

Aren't you old enough to remember Swansea becoming a city?

Well at least we know what Medway has to do to get city status now.

I miss the good old days when you had to have a cathedral to be deemed a city! All these modern upstarts thinking they should be cities just because they've got a giant TK Maxx and two Nando's!

What are the chances this would have happened within the next 12 months or so if he hadn't died and the policy hadn't suddenly become a populist open goal?

Don't we all. Can anyone here honestly say they had any problems back then? I highly doubt it.

I'm conflicted, I really like my local MP, but I can't ignore the chance of turning my little village into a city.
