I think that this is actually a massive risk to the royal family as a whole. Once somebody essentially leaves the Royal family it kind of normalises the process and if another royal gets ticked off they can just leave. Being part of the Royal Family sucks quite a lot as you're giving up a load of freedom to do the role.

Also it some senses by leaving they're creating a competing brand as well.

Edward VIII did it and it didn’t kick off a trend of people leaving the family.

There are very few royals who could do it and have the profile to succeed. Charles and William are unlikely to walk away from the throne. Edward, Anne and Andrew are the actual children of the Queen, but I don’t see any of them being big successes away from royalty. Zara? Maybe I guess. The other two girls (Beatrice and Eugene?) would crash and burn. I genuinely can’t name any others.

Ah how I long for the good old days when our royal families were ended by the swords of the French. At least in Medieval times there was an actual risk to the Crown, they had to work hard to stay in power as there always a threat of being usurped.

Now that they're effectively a ceremonial institution, practically a business, there's simply no chance of them ever fading away or disbanding.

I think you'd be looking at prince George when he comes of age would be very damaging. I think they got away with Edward as he could be written up as the bad guy, I mean he was a Nazi sympathiser. With somebody like Harry it's harder to shift all the blame onto him or Megan so it makes the Royal Family look bad. If you don't keep these things in check it starts to damage public perception which could lead to the break up of the royal family.

Maybe. Charles’ll be dead by then and George will be Prince of Wales. Harry’s decision to step away will be long forgotten.

William’s other kids might do something similar though.

Despite being born into immense wealth and privilege, I actually feel quite sorry for Prince George. He's what - 6 years old? When I was 6 I wanted to be a fireman or a ghostbuster or a dinosaur - eventually he'll learn the cold hard facts that any dream he had of doing X job or living in Y country or marrying Z girl are completely closed off to him, simply not permitted. You will be King and spend all of your time cutting ribbons, hosting pricks like Trump and the Saudis, waving (lots of waving), you will live in England until you die and you will marry whichever horse-faced toff is selected from the stable of socialites hags.

Must be pretty gooseberry fool to be trapped in a gilded cage.

I agree it's only a possibility but if you're invested in keeping the royal family together you've got to take it as a serious risk. That's why they're having these meetings.

Perhaps that will be Harry's punishment for this "betrayal" - forced disabling of his reptilian DNA to prevent him from taking advantage of his true lizard form!

Harry never was a reptile, Diana and James Hewitt are/were 100% human.

Difference is that Andrew was shagging white kids, whereas Harry is a blood traitor.

They (and Diana, to be fair) are literally the only good looking catches in the history of the monarchy, I don't rate George's chances of striking lucky

Kate has probably normalised the idea of marrying a 'commoner' (Though really she's anything but) for future generations of the Royal Family. If the direct heir to the throne can do it then any of them can.

I'd say you have to include Sophie Wessex in that list as well, but yeah, after that it's a bit hit and miss. In fairness it's difficult to tell before photography because of the inaccuracy of painted portraits, but I'm pretty sure Anne Boleyn and Catherine Parr were supposed to be quite hot.

I think he'll do alright for himself personally. As Laga said, the future queen is just from a well off family in the Thames Valley.
