At the same time as UC cuts, poor Peter thinks MPs deserve a pay rise

I was just about to post that.

It must be so tough earning £82k per year.

I know, I can't imagine how you would survive on that paltry amount! But don't worry it's okay because they make it up in expenses! :toot:

I checked that guys expenses. He's actually one of the better ones. But he still claims £15k a year.

His claims look legitimate enough this year.

Go back a decade though:

He's a banana split but still far from the worst.

Peter Bottomley, the Conservative MP for Worthing West, West Sussex, and Lady Bottomley, the former health secretary, make relatively modest expenses. Mr Bottomley claims £126,603, making him the 561st most expensive MP, while his wife claims another £20,000 from the Lords, making their total claim just over £146,000. But Mr Bottomley claims the maximum possible from the Commons to cover his second home in Westminster, £23,083. Lady Bottomley claimed another £7,500 for overnight stays for the 75 days she attended the Lords in 2007-08.

It's crazy how out of touch most MPs are. Earning £82k, plus getting your meals, travel, and other expenses either paid for entirely or subsidised, and it's still not enough. :fp:
Makes you wonder if they even have a clue about what some of their constituents are trying to live on.

The best the Tory fanboys can muster is desperately shouting "it's not a cut" because it was a temporary uplift.

Obviously it'd never happen but I think before anybody can become an MP, they should have to work for minimum wage for one year. All assets would be frozen so that they couldn't cheat.

I cannot fathom how people like that can't look at their income and expenditure and think, "aha! Aaaah... Yes I don't really need that". It's just mind boggling.

It's the 2nd Jobs and business they have that wind me up.

If your an MP that is your full time job and you should have no other business interests.

Though what's to stop someone's giving there shares to family then having them transferred back at a later date.

Something like this would have been front page news for days a decade or so ago now it hardly gets a mention as it’s so common.

Oh we all got it wrong! It's just that older MPs might really struggle on £82k a year.

I love the way they're trying to make his Mrs a thing. She looks like the kind of person who'd work on reception at a narrow boat holiday rental place.

Yeah, it's a really sad state of affairs that something like this is deemed barely newsworthy.
