It may be a blessing in disguise. If Johnson remains in post, and he ain't gonna quit, we could actually see a big enough bleeding of support for a change in government!
Also if the Tories do remove him it'll probably annoy the voters still loyal to Johnson. I think we're see a lot of attacks by aggrieved Johnson supporters I'm the lead up to the next election. Especially if they try and swing back to the centre ground.
There were rumblings Sunak could have resigned to deal the killer blow, and the fact it took him until half 10 to say anything probably verifies it was at least considered – however, he has now tweeted to say he is determined to keep working .

Not the first time they've had to beg Sunak to stay is it?
I'd imagine that's because his leadership bid is holed below the waterline and his chances of one of the bigger cabinet posts in a new executive are pretty slim at the moment.
The key one for me at the moment is Ben Wallace. He seems the most sensible and grown-up of the cabinet and the one least in thrall to Johnson. If he jumped ship then that would say a lot, particularly given the Ukraine situation.

Apparently not and he'd have blatantly strawberry floated off by now, ready to swoop back in as leader if he hadn't shat himself so spectacularly, for all to see .
