Gillian Duffy was the turning point. It became less acceptable to accuse someone of intolerance than to actually be intolerant. Hartlepool not interested in voting for a better outcome because their electorate no longer genuinely believes this is ever achievable; so instead they vote for the public figures who most closely align with their own beliefs and worldview.

The far right and the Tories have successfully brainwashed huge areas of the country into believing that voting for Labour means your kids will be forced to be trans, you'll be forced to have a Muslim illegal immigrant next door and that the EU will come to your home to straighten your bananas.

Homophobia, transphobia, racism and xenophobia are a very powerful way of persuading people to vote against their interests.
