I fully support calls for more diversity in Cabinet and Parliament, but inevitably the purpose of it gets completely forgotten and gets used to just beat the other side with a political stick.

Take Swinsons election as party leader. Its a great thing because she was the best candidate for the job, but the focus from inside politics has been 'hurr durr Labour are the only party never to have a female leader'.

It cheapens the gain of having a diverse cabinet if you then spend a ton of time shouting about how diverse it is. It's like the government equivalent of saying "I have loads of black friends".

This is a forum, not an airport. You don't need to announce your departure.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

Probably. It doesn’t matter that the money doesn’t really exist or that any trade agreements with the EU will involve making the payments.

What a great way for the new “global” Britain to start. Running away from its commitments while also asking the rest of the world to trust us.

Labour spokesperson:

As Jo Swinson well knows, a no confidence vote now will only strengthen Boris Johnson's hand and further his march towards No Deal.

This is childish and irresponsible game playing by the Lib Dems who are more interested in attacking Labour than stopping No Deal.

We probably are, but there’s a chance all this bollocks will spur Remain MPs into some sort of action. The government has barely any majority, it wouldn’t take much to defeat them on any of their plans.

I think a General Election is likely to happen this year. The question is whether Johnson calls it before or after his “guaranteed” 31 October Brexit date.

You're not being optimistic enough! You're not being optimistic enough! You're not being optimistic enough!

Johnson's first appearance at the commons as PM made me incredibly angry.

So Labour's position has gone from campaigning for a GE and disagreeing with a 2nd ref... to advocating for a 2nd ref and disagreeing with a GE?

Who knows?

Labour's shadow chancellor John McDonnell said if Mr Johnson campaigned on the platform of a no-deal Brexit in any forthcoming general election, his own party would "almost certainly be Remain".

However, he told ITV that Labour would still look at any new deal Mr Johnson negotiated with the EU.

"But at the moment I can't see him stitching up a deal that's acceptable either to Labour or to quite a bit of his own side as well - so it looks as though we will then be in a straight situation between a no deal and Remain," he added.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-49107417

If there is a GE then they will probably campaign for Remain, but they will look at Johnson's deal to see if they like it first.

As we know there are no deals better than Remaining, so why not just bloody say it!

I can easily see where the "British Trump" comparison is coming from.
Johnson seems very much of the opinion that it's his way and nothing but. Anything that isn't his way won't and shouldn't happen. Unfortunately for him he lacks the economic clout to back this up like the USA has.

IDS has already strawberry floated up when it comes to the new cabinet.

Her appointment has raised a few eyebrows among critics of the new prime minister but one of his colleagues, Iain Duncan Smith, has attempted to defend Patel's appointment.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme, the former leader of the Conservatives attempted to explain why he believed Johnson had chosen Patel - but managed to make a huge error when he said where she was from.

She's there because of three things I think. One, she does believe in the project. We have to leave by the 31st of October. If you've got 100 days you can't have people who are saying that they are unsure about this

Two, I think it is very important that Boris has someone in there that represents the true changing nature of Britain. She's a woman, she's also from the Indian subcontinent. This is really important.

Three, he's got a wider agenda than just Brexit. She's there to ensure that police support is much bigger and we've also got a huge change to how we deal with migration.

Duncan Smith was probably correct in two of his three points but Patel is not from the 'Indian subcontinent,' as he put it. She was actually born in London in 1972.

Her parents are originally from India but they moved to Uganda in the 1960s, before Ugandan president Idi Amin announced the expulsion of Asians from the African nation in 1972.

No, Labour's position is entirely sensible. If a no confidence vote is taken now, it will be massively defeated. Even if Boris decided to go for it and back it for a GE, he would win big because at the moment he could pull back a lot of the Brexit Party voters.

The best thing to do is to wait a few weeks, let Boris back himself into a corner with the EU and when no deal looks imminent, that's the time to go for it, as you might just get some Tories to back it when they have no other option left to prevent no deal.

Four teenagers have been charged with a homophobic attack against two women who refused to kiss on a London night bus.

The attack on Melania Geymonat and her date Chris happened on the top deck of the bus as they were travelling to Camden Town on 30 May.

Both women suffered facial injuries and needed hospital treatment.

The boys, aged between 15 and 17, have all been charged with an aggravated hate crime and will appear at Highbury Corner Youth Court on 21 August.

Three of the suspects face further charges, Scotland Yard said:

- A 16-year-old, from Wandsworth, south London, is charged with theft and handling stolen goods
- Another 16-year-old, from Kensington and Chelsea, is accused of possessing cannabis
- The youngest boy, 15, also from Kensington and Chelsea, is charged with handling stolen goods.
