Its all the aspirational (and largely unattainable to the majority) lifestyle ads you see everywhere that gives people the expectation of everyone being able to afford something you'd see on Grand Designs.

As long as its suitably clean, safe and warm accommodation then I'd say bring on the Eastern block style architecture and help stop people becoming homeless.

The whole US property market is nuts. They've been building loads of suburban sprawl with loan money from the state governments that don't bring in the enough tax money to pay for the infrastructure so cities are going broke. Also they're building load of really nice high end property in places that will in all likelihood be underwater in my lifetime.

I doubt things are much better here. In fact I know there are a load of new build houses in MK that are right on a flood plane.

Yeah you're right. One of the keys to the success of the capitalistic system is advertising aspects of a rich mans life while convincing people that they can achieve it with enough hard work. The stuff we see now that more resembles brutalist architecture tend to be inner city council estate housing, which further adds to the stigma around it because many people who don't live there will take that sort of look as a symbol of poverty, something they consider themselves above.

Well the Russian Federation hasn't been communist for about 30 years. Homelessness didn't really exist for most of the duration of the USSR, but it became a problem again by the mid 90s.
For a modern example we can look toward Cuba, which has no homelessness despite being throttled by economic sanctions. I guess also China, though a lot of people would hesitate to call them truly socialist.

Well the Russian Federation hasn't been communist for about 30 years. Homelessness didn't really exist for most of the duration of the USSR, but it became a problem again by the mid 90s.
