It was the cause of most of the modern issues.

True, rose tinted glasses from my point of view I guess, but things didn't seem quite so poisonous and toxic back then.

There's an obsession right now with believing this toxicity is a modern invention with social media at its heart. This ignores just how vile the political landscape already was for marginalised people and how that came from both traditional, right wing media (including our current PM!) and the policies of major political parties.

We were already a country obsessed with the perceived threats to our British way of life from "bogus asylum seekers", the EU, benefit claimants, LGBT people, Muslims, and travellers among others.

I don't think anybody has claimed there was no toxicity 15 years ago.

But it's far worse now. And I'm not solely blaming social media. The Brexit vote is the biggest cause of the current toxicity, it literally tore families apart.

It's definitely worse now but a big reason for that is that toxicity is impacting a much wider range of people than it did before. Brexit is arguably more of a symptom than a cause. I feel that if Remain had won the referendum in 2016 it would have only ever delayed this inevitable breakdown in social trust.

The problem since 2016 is that it now impacts me as a middle class straight white male. How could people let this happen

The huge rise in hate crimes against ethnic minorities and LGBT people since 2016 doesn't really back that statement up.

That wasn't aimed at anyone, was just being flippant.

I know you're joking but I have seen people ask that before, amusingly the people that ask that are usually people whose favourite politician ever was Tony Benn. ;)

Tony Benn is my favourite politician, what does this mean?

In actual decent news, the latest on Matt Hancock getting rejected by the UN is absolutely delicious! Some cock and ball story about not being able to be a UN Envoy whilst being an MP, but Gordon Brown never had a problem doing both!

His working class credentials are about the same as Rees-Mogg's.

But but but, he gave up a peerage!

Does this mean I have moved up to middle class? I blame New Labour for this outrage!

If you think it's working class to give up a peerage, then you're beyond middle class. You're basically posher than the Queen.

I'm not sure "blame Raynor for the completely unrelated death of Amess" is the winning argument Hodges thinks it is.

It’s not OK to assault Tories.
It is OK to hate them.

So much for the tolerant Left . Oppression of the poor and the vulnerable, alongside the dismantling of progressive society as we know it, is just a different viewpoint — show some bloody respect.

Because giving the government the ability to tie all of a persons online activity (Lets not pretend it would stop at social media alone) to a specific person wouldn't possibly ever be abused.

More freedom being given up to counter a "threat".

Where's the "facism" checklist again?

I think that's probably more stupidity than fascism.

Now THIS is fascism.
