I'd pay for the bell in Downing Street to never make a noise again.

As ridiculous as it sounds, it's not a bad idea. If there's enough Brexiteers that are adamant Big Ben has to bong to celebrate us leaving the EU then they can pay for it themselves rather than expecting all taxpayers (or even just Londoners) to cough up for it. Apparently it's been costing over £100,000 to do it on New Year's Eve, and to do it now could be up to £500,000 (mostly down to the delay of restoration works).

At £46k a bong, it is a strawberry floating ridiculous idea. NYE was a stupid idea as well.

It's a bloody clock, who the strawberry float cares if it bongs to mark certain events.

Still, Leavers do like wasting money so hopefully it bankrupts a few of the stupid bastards.

The country has decided to cripple its economy so spending hundreds of thousands on Big Ben bonging feels fitting.

How much would it cost to hire a really loud sound system and just play the bong noises over that?

If some people want to pay for it out of their own pocket, then let them pay for it. For once I think Boris has got it spot on in terms of compromise. He's not saying they can't do it, nor is he saying the taxpayer is going to fund it either.

To be fair, hard to disagree with that.

I don’t think anybody has said that they should be arrested for trying to do it.

But it is a stupid idea, no matter who pays for it.

Couldn't they just shove a speaker up there and play the sounds of the bell? That seems like it'd be cheaper.

I have to tell myself that the international aid post is a joke. Surely to god it must be.

All these people wanting a hammer to hit the end of the bell is a perfect metaphor for Brexit.
