So what are the actual motivations for having him in this position?

There are so few people with any real expertise in trade who support Brexit that the Tories will literally hire anyone who even slightly looks the part. They can point out he was prime minister of Australia and ignore that he was thrown out by his own party.

I think the Tony Abbott appointment is just a cynical move to try and satisfy the factions that want more trade with the commonwealth. They don't give a gooseberry fool over personal views of appointments, they will just ignore it until the news cycle moves on.

Hancock was on BBC news this morning saying how they didn't announce a mass testing target as he didn't want to be on the news a month later being accused of missing the target. :fp:

Who are these people? I'll have to remember than line and never promise to achieve anything for my bosses.

To be fair, not setting targets is a very good way of avoiding having to hit targets.

It's a superb tactic. I'll not be making any promises again in life so I don't get accused of breaking them.

Next time the council ask me to pay a bill, I'll be saying "sorry mate, can't make any promises as I don't want you calling me in a month to say you still haven't been paid".

Even if he was a trade negotiation expert, he's a climate change denier so that automatically makes him an awful fit for current trade negotiations
