I thought you lived near Worksop?
I’m from Worksop and will probably be moving back, I currently live in Rufford it’s about 20 minutes away, I have never lived in Scotland but I am a passionate unionist
Never lived here but you're going to tell us how our country should be run.

Didn't realise there was much call for canvassing against Scottish independence in Rufford. You live and learn.
Ex-wealthy Englishmen with no right to do so have loved telling other peoples how they ought to live for centuries.

I was born and have lived in this our country all my life, it’s called The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, I’m quite the fan

It’s not always been called that and it doesn’t have to always be called that.
I don’t know about Scotland but I think the N Ireland part will be gone in our lifetimes.

Do you know, like, anything of the people and cultures of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales?
Businesses spent a fuckton of cash stocking up ahead of a possible no deal Brexit in Q1 and we're supposed to be surprised they spent less in Q2? Which strawberry floating idiot is doing the forecasting?

It's fine becuase he's going to come here and educate the rest of us about how great we have it and how it's no big deal that we continue to be marginalised and ignored at every turn by a system fundamentally stacked against us. This abusive relationship we're stuck with is about to fundamentally strawberry float over hundreds of thousands of the poorest people in this country (above and below the border) all to satisfy the whims of racist, elitist banana splits who have dragged the UK to the hard right to solidify their own interests. Time and again we voted against Tory rule and we got it. Time and again we were told staying in the UK was the only way to ensure we stayed in the EU yet here we are, being forcibly removed by a prime minister voted in by a handful of strawberry floating Tories.
strawberry float that system and strawberry float anyone who comes here to try and tell me that we're "Better together".

If we're going to diverge into a big debate on a second referendum in Scotland - can we have a new thread for it?
Nah mate, everyone is more than entitled to present alternative opinions. Just don't expect people to let slide strawberry floating thick opinions, especially ones that ignore the cultures and people that are supposedly a part of the 'United' Kingdom.
There's also no need for a new thread; this is a perfectly reasonable discussion to be having regarding politics in the UK. Now if there was an actual second referendum being tabled, then it would be grounds for a new thread. As it stands, questioning whether the current state of affairs will lead to the dissolution to the UK over time is a pertinent one.

It’s a debate thread not a Tory/Unionist blog, if a controversial opinion gets dropped then it’s only natural the responding posts will be heated.
Telling Scottish people that they should stay in the Union because “the name is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland” when you live in Worksop is never going to end well.
It wasn't really my intention to change the subject so unless anyone else wants to discuss it I think we're fine without a new thread just now.
I'll take back the "strawberry float off" rhetoric, but you'll never convince me that a conservative government has any interest in what is best for Scotland.

Possibly. I think the issue may be is that Richard UK's opinion isn't designed to be offensive but his view could be classed as a typically English one (ie - things are fine as they are - don't upset the status quo). Whilst this is seemingly inoffensive to English ears it comes across as offensive and patronising to Scottish independence supporters because its said in a glib manner or perceived as such.

Especially when coming from Captain Union Jack himself.
Edit: My final word in this would be that I don't begrudge people being for the Union. There are a load of things about the UK I do love and in the last referendum I was very much on the fence until a week or so before voting Yes. The last few years since then have only further convinced me that was the right choice though.

That’s why I said controversial rather than offensive. I don’t think he’s deliberately trying to antagonise Scottish posters, he just doesn’t realise how he is coming across. Which is worse in a way, that arrogant English “we know what’s best” attitude never goes down well with any nationalities other than Americans who find it cute.

How dare you marginalise and misrepresent the way in which the constituent nations of the United Kingdom are made up, and completely brush under the carpet the legitimate dissatisfaction that is felt by many people who live outside of England.
I'm not a fervent nationalist by any manner or means, but that is an out and out marginalisation of several million people who do have strong national identities.

It was a stupid and ill-thought out post though. Someone questioned him about never having lived in "our country", explicitly stating that they meant Scotland, and Richard's response was, "Oh but I do live in our country, the UK", clearly meaning he's just lived in England.
At best, it's ill-thought out and reducing a Scottish issue to, again, focus on the English side. Or it's stupid, because of course living in England is not a valid retort to being questioned about living in Scotland, despite both being in the UK.
At worst, it's dripping with the sort of elitist, imperialist thinking which is typical of a lot of English people on the matter. And, let's face it, often from a certain group of the middle and upper classes largely situated in the South of England. That's because their UK and they are quite happy the whole nation being governed by and centred around that area.
It's not just Scotland that gets that sneering patronising. Areas of England too often have to suffer it, if they have the nerve to be on the "periphery" or not London and the South East.
A lot of people there tend to think that the South East and London fuel the entire country and that they have all our best interests at heart. Or that they fuel the entire economy and we should be grateful for any kind table scraps we get brushed in our direction.
As someone originally from the North-East, I don't exactly have faith in Westminster to have my region's best interests always at heart. How can they, when our country is so hopelessly lopsided and reliant on London?
So therefore, how on earth can someone living on Scotland have any faith in Westminster to have support and represent them faithfully?
I'm English and I want Scotland to stay, but largely because I sort of want more unique, differing voices in the UK and that the wider and broader it is, the more chances we can all drag some of the funds and resources to the other parts of the kingdom. We lose Scotland, and we lose a lot of eyes northward and a lot of accountibilty to not just ignore places our parliament don't have a great interest in. We lose all those voices demanding to be heard. By losing Scotland, we make the UK much more reliant on English voices and often that just means a certain type of English voice gets heard.
I probably feel the North East and parts of Southern Scotland have a lot in common too, possibly a lot of links to Ireland too.
But if I was Scottish, I'm almost certain I'd be voting to be rid of Westminster and an English/Welsh voter base that clearly doesn't represent what Scotland itself wants.
