Keir seems too clever to constantly reopen old wounds by waiting a while to reinstate the whip for Corbyn. Better to just call it a day with this decision and let Corbyn remain in the past rather than constantly popping up every so often causing trouble like Ken Livingston was doing a few years ago.

I can't see how Keir benefits from at some stage in the future letting Corbyn back in?

People have long term health repercussions from this.

It's the deaths that is the immediate priority. The long term impacts are largely an unknown at this point in terms of how many are affected, how long it lasts etc. I don't think there has been any completed analysis of how it compares to other respiratory illnesses or coronaviruses. That isn't to say its not important, but by focusing on deaths it should ensure more compliance, and stopping the spread to prevent death should also reduce numbers of long Covid.

Top priority has to be on preventing death at the moment. Once we get on top of that, the next stage is helping people through the long term impact, understanding it better and developing treatments.

I think you've missed my point. I'm not at all talking about policy or approach, I'm complaining about people like Toby Cuntface there who compare the death rate to influenza (which they're not even comparing properly anyway!) to minimise the severity of the virus.

Because creating division within the party pisses off his own core supporters who voted him in as the unity candidate, one who would provide some continuity with socialist policies in the form of his "pledges". The NEC decision was, I believe, unanimous in giving Corbyn the strongest possible sanction short of full expulsion and was made up equally of Corbyn supporters and critics.

There's a danger in pissing off activists who carry out grassroots activities as the centre right of the party won't pick up that slack, and right wing voters aren't going to care enough in 2024 to back Labour over the tried and true right wing choice.

I think he's waiting for Corbyn to go further than his statement yesterday and outright apologise for his comments and issues of antisemitism during his leadership, something Corbyn was able to do twice in 2018 but for whatever reason has refused to do since but should.

I'd happily return to Scotland.

My partner talks about being open to the idea but I think she'd prefer to stay in Poland and resist what's happening.

Tonight they rolled out their special forces who don't have to wear any ID or give a badge number when asked like the police do, so essentially can act with impunity. Not that the regular police are exactly bastions of restraint here.

Today's govt update as they try to placate the protests was announcing that you'll have to give birth to a baby even if it's known it will be dead on arrival, but you'll be provided with a priest in those instances

It's been escalating for weeks now but I think it's getting to the point where the protesters will break unfortunately. It's progressively smaller crowds of mostly women in their 20s and 30s vs hundreds of policemen with tear gas and batons, and hundred strong groups of skinheads.

Unfortunately the EU and member states have been abdicating their responsibility when it comes to Poland's government for a long time and I don't expect that to change now.

Hopefully you guys manage to avoid as much trouble as possible. You are incredibly brave to stay and your partner is even braver to take part in the protests. Culturally there’s a section of poland that is incredibly right wing, bigoted, fascist and racist. I don’t see it changing any time soon. I always find this odd considering how much their country was strawberry floated over by extremists from both spectrums during WW2.

Tbh I can understand it when Poland's impact on the world stage is negligible. I've seen a few articles briefly covering it in the Guardian but that's been it.

As much as I love central and eastern europe it's a real overt problem across these countries. Gender roles are still much more strongly in place and homophobia and racism is much more acceptable. I've met plenty of people in informal settings where they make jokes or comments that are unacceptable to me but shrugged off by the rest of the group.

I always come back to the poll before last year's election where they asked people under 40 what the biggest threat facing the country was. Women said climate change, while men said LGBT rights.

I have a lot of friends from Eastern Europe. They have all told me that it is very old fashioned back home, some really quite conservative views from their parents generation. From their point of view, the talented young people tend to head abroad to western Europe at the earliest opportunity, and even then they feel guilty about indulging in "Western decadence" (that is their word for it, not mine).

It's really fascinating, but also tragic. My closest friend, she says she loves her home country but basically feels homeless as she no longer fits there in terms of her world view and lifestyle and couldn't go back as she'd have to take a huge pay cut. But at the same time she wants to go back because its still home.
